Hey, I know a lot of people have probably asked this already, but does anyone know if the 4S will be available for pre-order from the online store or is it going to be a mess handled by the carriers again?? Been waiting on getting a new iphone for about 6 months at this stage - nearly killing me!! hahaha... And also will it be available unlocked or ... ???

You could also just head up to Belfast when it launches up there and get in a queue and buy a sim free one.

As much as I'd actually love to do this, I can't justify taking a day off to get a phone - like I'm even planning to order online rather than going into a physical shop!! hahaha!! Was even thinking of asking one of you to pick me up one, but that would probly end up getting very messy!!!

unless you know somebody personally then its messy. im personally not going up this year, did it last year to buy 3 phones, but there was a bigger gap between the Eire and UK launch dates then and also alot less competition down here selling the iPhone.

Im happy with my 4, and due an upgrade in Feb, so may hold off until next year.

Thinking of holding off as well but will the next iPhone be released at the normal July/august time next year or October again

yeah thats the million dollar question at the moment, do apple revert back to the July launch or keep it a 12 months from Oct from now onwards.

Ive 2 phones on contract at present, so in Feb, i might upgrade the one to the 4S, then if a 5 or whatever comes out later in the year upgrade the remaining account and pass on the 4S to the GF or sell.

tbh though, im not too pushed at present, as i'll happily keep my 4 for another year or so and wait for the iPhone 3D :D

I'd be shocked if Apple left the 4S as there premiere model until next October. Specwise, Samsung is nipping at their heels. I can easily see an iPad 3 and iPhone 5 being launched in June/July 2012. I'm waiting because the 4S is just a ludicrious price for an marginal upgrade on my 4.

Thinking of popping up to Belfast. I did it for the original iPad launch. Got there around 10 I remember and there was no bother. Never done it for a phone - will it really be that different? Think i'd be getting the 9:30 train up so wouldn't get there till about noon.

Another question - I've got a 3GS with O2 at the moment. I understand the 3GS uses a regular-sized sim card while the 4 and 4S use micro-sims? Would I just be able to go into an O2 store on, say, Thursday, and ask them to transfer my number to a new micro sim?

Im on a corporate vodafone friends and family plan with my wife's company. I just looked at the most recent upgrade list for new phones for people on that plan.

€350 for an iPhone 4!!! Thats with my 18 month upgrade!!

Its 40 a month for all calls and texts to Irish numbers.. so Ive a feeling Im gonna be taken for a spin if I want to buy a 4S on the upgrade.

Dont transfer until you have the 4S in your hand. Go into O2 and ask them for a blank replacement micro sim. Tell the guy in the shop not to do the transfer there that you will ring customer care later as you want to get used to the iPhone first.

ive gotten a few micro sims over the year for me, family and friends etc and while i was there, they ask for your number and the guy done transfers there and then on his PC without saying anything to me. So just to be forwarned.

PS - best of luck in your Belfast trip, hope you get one.

There is no pre orders for second tier countries (which Ireland is one) orders start on the 28th and will start to be delivered in November.

I'm planning on ordering one on the 28th, should I be waiting by the laptop at 11:59PM on the 27th (ie. will it make any difference to the delivery date if I order as soon as the clock hits 12)?

I imagine orders are filled on a first come first served basis, so yeah I'd expect it to help

    Edit:
But bare in mind the order button/page might not be availible the second it ticks over midnight. It might be 8am, 10am, 12 pm or some random time.

iPhone 4 went on sale in July 2010 on Apple.ie and were delivered in the middle of August. I think they went on sale at 08.00am Irish time.

Yep they were on sale in O2 stores at 8am, although some stores in city centres opened at midnight, i know 3,VF and O2 on grafton street did.

I went to newbridge at 7.15am, and this was only because i was up with my daughter and 6am, and their was 2 lads who had arrived at 2am.......... Pair of spas to be honest, they were filming eachother and taking photos of themselves buying the phones, then to cap it all they wheeled out the 17" MBPs to activate the phones.. After they left everyone including the staff took the absloute piss out of them... High 5s etc, i was seriously embarrassed. Serious nerds.

Anyway i got a call from O2 saying they have issued an upgrade to my business account to purchase a 4s. Wont be queing for it this time and will wait for a 32GB, even if it takes weeks.

I'm pretty sure the iPhone 4 was available to buy SIM-free from the Irish Apple Store from day one. It definitely wasn't January. But there was a 3 to 4 week wait.
