Stock wheel is 16" I guess.. you could run a 15" rim with taller profile tyres no problem... 15x31s probably.

Toyota Dealer is an ass - no surprise there.

It may not be on it's original rims, replacement ones can go from 15" to a ridiculous 22", there's a huge range. As long as the tyre size matches the rims it doesn't matter provided the rim clears the front brake callipers.

Jap 4x4s used to be typically 15", 16" is more common now but bling ones may be on 17 or 18" alloy rims or, if you're a drug dealer, 22" chrome rims with rubber bands on.

What size tyres are they (will be something like 265/75R15 on the sidewall)?

    They normally have 15 inch wheels - 255/70 x 15 I'm pretty sure

Do you mean the wheel size or the tyre size?

Because "should have 16s" means 16 inch wheels. "16s" on it's own does not mean anything to do with tyres. Yes there would be a different size tyre as in "265/70/16" (example of a 4x4 tyre size not saying that's what has to be on the hilux, i don't know exactly what the standard original equipment wheel and tyre size on newer model hiluxes is).

You can actually change the wheel size and as long as the tyre size is right you're not going to be "doing damage" but if you have the "drug dealer" 22 inch chrome wheels that 101sean mentioned then they have extremely low profile tyres on them and if you go onto any rough surface you can end up damaging the actual wheels very easily as well as quickly destroying the very expensive tyres.

From what you said it seems to be likely to be a "pub hearsay" type piece of advice you got. It may be worthwhile explaining in more detail and giving an indication of which wheels and tryes are on the pickup now.

I image 16 inch alloy wheels would have come standard on a crewcab hilux anyway.
A lower spec one in more utilitarian spec may well have been available with 15s also. and as SI guru says you can easily make up the gap in size with a bigger tyre

Not exactly.. but the tyre on a 15" wheel will have a similar rolliing radius to a lower profile tyre on 16" rim... so it is essentiall the same. Unless you had very tall tyres on the 15"s...33's or something then there is no mechanical worry.
