i want windows 7 for the pc i'm building but don't want to pay full retail. i can get the upgrade at student discount prices but i don't have an older OS installed on the new pc. can i take the hard drive out of an old laptop, (running windows 2000 professional) hook it up to the new pc, run 2000 pro and then upgrade it to windows 7?

No, you can only upgrade to Windows Seven from a licenced copy of Windows Vista.

Buy an OEM copy of Windows 7 is your best bet, If your a student see if your course grants you access to MSDN Academic, you can get Windows 7 Pro for free if thats the case ;)
