No trade papers! How do I get to Oz?

I have been self employed for 12 years as a painter. I am excellent at my trade, but I dont have any papers. I understand that I need to prove myself to get a visa.
I think the 475 skilled migrant visa is the one for my needs, as its very tough to get sponsored by a company from here for the 457 sponsorship visa.
I think that I should be able to accumulate the points necessary with state sponsorship, though I am not sure of the exact procedure for my case.
If anybody is going through, or has gone through this process, I would love to hear how they are getting on, or I am open to correctiion if anything here is incorrect....

I think the process I need to go through is as follows
    1. Apply for trade assessment.
Is this necessary for an uncertified painter to get a 475 visa, as I can prove that I have been in the business for years?
What type of assessment is it?
    Who does the correct assessments?
    How much do they cost?
    2. Apply for State sponsorship.
    How long does this take?
    3. Send application for visa and await approval.
How long should visa approval take?

I want to make the application myself, as I just dont have the cash to take on a visa specialist company, but as I go through the process, I will let you know how things are going. I will be delighted to benefit from your experiences, and share mine with you all!
    Mark.

    Hi Mark,
This is similar position we find ourselves...40yr old electrician for 23 yrs, 8 yrs selfemployed , wife not on skilled list, 3 kids under 9...having gone through the various visa, the Business longstay (subclass 457) visa is the route i think we might be taking..

here is the link for the details on the skill assessment...a huge amt of paperwork and very old files being asked for..did
    http://www.deewr.gov.au/Skills/Programs/SkillsAssess/TRA/residenceVisa/Skilled/Documents/MigrationSkillsGuidelines.pdf

we don't have much spare, make that any spare cash but i am will to spend the €95 to get the first consultation with a visa specialist to see about the correct route and what we have to do.....
on the visa we are looking at we need a job to go to and it doesn't have to be my trade job, and its temporary...which suits as we're not sure about permanently leaving...my problem is where do you get info on available jobs

I will be watching to see what guidance others who have been down the route or are on the route can give.

Best of luck with your journey!

Hi Dreaming your best bet would be to look for a job on www.seek.com.au and ask them if they would be willing to sponsor.

I have been down the 457 route myself and the thing you have to remember is that although it is temporary if you lose or quit your job you have 28 days to find a new sponsor or you will have to leave Australia.

Also in some states you have to pay Kids school fee's etc.

nice one, that could be a wise move to visit a visa specialist. Will the visa specialist help you if you dont intend using them in the future? It certainly would be handy if they can help!

Good man on following through with it, Most people come on here asking about an "easy way" into OZ. when the reality is that they have to apply for a visa and fork out some money first, then wait some more before they even think about leaving arrives. Most dont post again!

So good luck in your visa application, hope you get it.

I think you need to check again.
457 isn't just having any old job to go to.

You need a willing sponsor, they need to nominate YOU for a paticular position, that needs to be approved and then you can apply/be assessed for the visa.

Very little chance of you getting sponsored in a job outside your trade

Didn't really know where to post this but this thread is as good as any I suppose.

Found this information posted by a migration agent on another Forum, which might be of interest to some.
What are the likely changes to the skilled occupation list?

Skills Australia does publish a list of "flagged" occupations which does indicate some insecurity for people in some occupations, see

    http://www.skillsaustralia.gov.au/PDFs_RTFs/FlaggedOccupations.pdf

This was at the top of the page:

    Flagged occupations
Skills Australia has also flagged a number of occupations which were borderline in terms of their inclusion on the 2011 SOL. These occupations may be removed in future years subject to monitoring of the labour market, education and migration data and evidence from stakeholders in relation to future oversupply issues, migration outcomes and areas of specific need.
    The occupations are:

I think that since then there has been the earthquake in christchurch, floods is brisbane and the cyclone in QL. That should hopefully keep the demand strong for tradespeople!

Christchurch is in New Zealand and has nothing to do with Australian immigration.

Your 100 % right Mandrake, but I think it puts a demand on the tradespeople heading down under!

Yeah but down under to New Zealand.

Although its worth mentioning that the above changes in the SOL are not written is stone it was George Lombard who posted it and he would not have did so unless he was hearing stuff on the grapevine. Its not to say that all occupations will be removed but more of an indication of those that have been flagged as borderline for removal. But like similar information in Oct/Nov/Dec 2008 it is writing on the wall and we all know what happened then.

QLD flood & cyclone is old news and was near a year ago and is only really a short term problem that has already been nutted out with offer of fast priority 457 & specified work for 2nd WHV, short term fixes for short term problem.

The General skills migration changes to the SOL above is looking at the big picture in the long term, they might remove some trades for 3-5 years and put them back on again when there is an increased demand.

Well I applied for the skills assessment, as I had no papers, and after about 5/6 weeks I now have qualified for my AQF 3 papers! I should receive them shortly..:D
I now want to organise my TRA assessment, but I am not 100% sure whether I need to do 'TRA points test advice' prior to the actual assessment.
It appears that it is compulsory to do 'points test advice' if you want to claim points for work experience............ ANYBODY???????
