Strange noise coming from the engine.

Hi I have a 07 Transit and lately it has started making this strange grunting sound, My mechanic serviced it and asked me to run some fluid in to the diesel tank when it was low on fuel.
This helped but now the grunting sound is back, roughly 64K on the clock.
It only happens on tick over.

    Many thanks in advance.

Grunting noise? Thats a bit cryptic.

They give trouble with EGR valves afaik.

The poster 'Plug' is a Ford man, he might be able to help you

a bit of a vague description ,, are the revs goin up and down by themselves at idle or just lack of power ? those transits can give a lot of different problems ,, . but all cureable

Its hard to describe, Its like a low rev and then a big rev and the engine kind of shudders but only when on tick over hope this explains it better.

Just to clarify - when sat in neutral the revs rise and fall (or fall and rise) on a cycle? Does the shudder remain a constant or only when low or high or in between, if there is an inbetween (ie normal)?

How is the exhaust? Black smoke? White smoke? Smelly?

Falls then rise with the shudder then

    Then? :)

Has the fuel filter been changed or checked? I'd check that first they do clog up and can cause the symptoms described.

The shudder is probably the drop to lower than normal idle revs causing the engine to move on its vibration mountings, as normal idle revs are a little above the engines natural frequency of movement on its mountings. So finding the cause of the idle problem would probably fix that part of the problem.

I think my Mechanic checked it I will ask him again.

How do i fix the idle issue

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭ford jedi

the idle issues are down to the imv valves ,, you really need to plug it in to be sure as a gammy egr valve will do same ,
