Wife is looking for a cheap enconomical and reliable car. She has been looking at a 07 Fiat Grande Punto 1.2l model. Just wondering if there are any issues relating to this model of car. I'm not keen on a Fiat but my understanding is that their reputation has been improving of late.

    Any thoughts welcome.......

the grande punto is a very solid car. almost bought a sporting version myself. the head gasket problems are a thing of the past and like alfa romeo, their latest cars a great.

Good car, handles well, enough space, cheap to run, simple to repair and stylish.

If something does break the parts are cheap and available.

Their reputation is really a legacy from the past but you must service the car correctly and on time.

I'd have one if I was in the market for a small car

The 1.2 is a bit underpowered and geared fairly short. Grand if you don't regularly do high speed driving.

An uncle of mine has a 07' Punto 1.2 with near 80k km on it at this stage. Never heard him complain about although the interior isn't the best.

Good solid car without the weaknesses of its older bretheren. The 1.2 is sluggish, but comfortable and economical. No head gasket issues with this car BUT timing belt failure on the Grande will bend the valves, unlike the earlier cars. I've heard some noises that the 1.4's can have a thirst for oil, but not massively so. Check the electrics, especially the heater fan on all speeds. Make sure you get 2 keys if you really need them as getting replacements from Fiat are megabucks.

    Forgot to add, a 1.4 16v is a very nice car indeed...:D
