My manager asked me if I was interested in a different type of role. It would be a step away from development and more of support role. Basically I would be reading through code and figure out what why something didnt work. I would be making config changes and it would be supporting something that is only used in banks and I am not sure if I always want to work for a bank

I am just wondering will I be shooting myself in the foot if I go into a more support type role?

I said I would think about it over the weekend.

I am not the strongest developer I will admit but I am not all that keen about QA or Support type of roles.

Read this thread. But, in short, don't do it.

As you're already in development I think it would be a retrograde step in career terms. Not to say that developers shouldn't be more formulaic with their development (i.e unit testing, tdd etc)., but if you're of a development mindset you'll find it horrible working in QA/support etc.

Earlier this year having spent over 7 years working in a financial (less than a happy experience) I was just desperate to get out, and took the first job that came along, which happened to be a 3rd level support/developer support role. Most of the work I did was QA based, I lasted 9 weeks and left and went back to a development role. Fantastic company, great people, no carp like the financial, but I was going out of my mind doing QA/support, and no matter how flexible you like to think you can be, sometimes the coat doesn't fit...
