Peg Leg Trousers - what to wear with?

I want to buy some Peg Leg Trousers but am not sure what to wear with them, particularly shoes/boots. In all magazines and on this weeks Gok fashion show they are with shoes (no socks). I would be too cold this time of year so need a shoe I can wear socks with or an ankle boot. Any suggestions?
