Ive rented privately with my boyfriend for the last 4 years, i am going to claim all the tax back on it, I'm just wondering if i can claim it all back in my name as it would be easier than both of us doing it separately or would that be an issue?

    Thanks.

It has to be claimed seperately by you both. You are entitled to claim a maximum tax credit of €2,000 per year which can be backdated for each of the last 4 years (assuming of course that you paid rent of at least €2,000 each per year).

That's a tax refund of €400 each for each of the 4 years provided that you both have paid sufficient tax in each of the 4 years.

Can be done quite easily using Revenue's PAYE online system.

Its due to be taken away in the budget, so you wont get it from 2012 on, but you can still claim for this year and the previous years even if you forget.

Bit of a blow of €800 per couple per year renting, but all property related tax reliefs are for the chop over the next few years.

Their reasoning on this one is - no need to give you tax relief for putting a roof over your head. What are you going to do, live in a cardboard box. Its a massive haul for revenue.

To combat the cries of "people need that to report landlords avoiding tax", they will be giving a one off reward on conviction to tenants for reporting their landlords for tax evasion. Apparently 99% of the calls they get reporting landlords now, the landlords are already taking care of their tax affairs. So its just wasting their time.
