The 10th running of the Fields of Athenry 10km will take place on St. Stephen's day, December 26th at 11am.

Over the last number of years this has has become one of the leading road races in the country, and this year we aim to raise the bar higher. The race returns to its now traditional route, finishing under the medival arch in Athenry.

The race has sold out for the last few years, so don't miss out and sign up now.
Online entry is available here » .

    A Bonus for early entrants.

Entry fee is reduced to €18 up until 30th November.
From December 1st entry fee will be €20.

    The Hat!

Ah yes, the colour of the hat... Forget the presidential election - this is the vote that counts!
The poll that decides the colour of our traditional race souvenir, the woolly hat, coveted by runners up and down the country, is now open.
You'll wear this hat with pride for a number of years, so it may as well match your wardrobe.
    VOTE HERE!

Are there ever entries left for this on the day Alan? Hoping to run this year but probably won't know for sure till the days coming up to it if I can make it or not...

If you get 'rejected' come to Wicklow - someone has started a vicious rumor that there'll be a p1$$ up afterwards.

For the last 2 years, as we deferred because of the ice, there were entries on the day.
Put simply, if we reach the limit, we can't take any more entries [insurance].
Personally speaking, I reckon it might just sell out before-hand, but it will be a close run thing. We have increased capacity this year, so then again...

Just a reminder to anyone thinking of entering that the entry fee goes up on Thursday.

Hoping for ice. January suits me better, I might not be able to get there on the 26th. :pac:

There will be no on-the-day entries this year.
We will reach our limit of 1500 before then - not sure exactly when.

Hope no big freeze this year !

Great race, is the course same as last yr or changed

No more hats please aburke , or at least a top hat or bowler would be more useful for the summer watching cricket..;)

    Back to 'original' route.

You'd look fine in a bowler hat running around Dangan alright - make your voice heard - vote early and often next year!

I didn't get a hat in 2008 :( Fond memories of the event though. Hope you have a crisp and clear race this time around.

Is that route easier or harder than last year?

It's 95% the same route. The start is moved to where the finish line was last year. You run the same loop, but cross the tracks and finish under the arch.
So no harder or easier, IMO.

Hi aburke. Are ye allowing race transfers? A friend of mine entered but forgot he had to take part in a charity handball tournament on the same day. Was about to enter myself but thought I'd pay give him the money if ye would allow it.

    No transfers I'm afraid.
    Logistical nightmare.

How did everyone get on? I'm so disappointed with mine, a few mins off my PB from earlier on in year, am disgusted with myself. Looks like all the overindulgence over the last few days and that killer wind today didn't help. Felt like I was going backwards at times :(
On a brighter note have to say a big well done to Athenry Ac for such a well organised event even the little things like signs directing you once you got off motorway to parking was a massive help. Loving the hat too :)

Got a pb for 10km by 5 minutes. Just over 44mins clock time. Been running well(by my standards)the last few months so was hoping for a 42 min finish - ok with 44 though given all the food & drink the last few days. even had to pull in just after half way to go for an emergency wee today, prob due to too much water on the way to athenry after too much drink lastnight. Was a nice race, good roads for it, & like the finishing lines location.

I must say this went off very well , from a runners point of view. I hadnt ran it in a few years . It was a good race to come back and run at a steady pace for me, post a silly accident/ injury, although i was still wrecked later on in the day!
I guess when things run so smoothly on the day you realise later on how well organised the whole thing was, congrats to aburke et al from the other side of the fence, good day out , despite the wind.

Excellent organisation, tons of marshals, great day out , had a fantastic time.

Think the beanie hat idea should be chucked out, thats my only suggestion to improve things and I bet I'm in a minority of one on that.

The contrast with this race and some non-club events is night and day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,593 ✭✭✭PWEI

Pleased enough with my run, over a minute faster than last year despite that horrendous wind. Very well organised race as always, great to have a few water stops along the way. Ended up running the race under my friends name, there was no point in wasting a race entry. I really don't understand the big deal made by race organisers towards race transfers. If it was a triathlon I could understand it being a logistical nightmare due to the race licensing issue. But for a road race it's just a name & dob change.

So you thought you'd break the rules because you don't agree with them?

Something like that. My friend is unemployed and €20 is a lot to him.
