I'm pleased to report the sighting of 2 Common Quail this week on rough ground bordering stubble fields near Naas. This is my first sighting of this species in Ireland and comes on the back of a signficant increase in the sightings and recording of calling males during the breeding season this year. I have no idea whether the birds I saw and heard were breeding, passage migrants, or where the offspring of breeders since I just happened to be on site doing some farm work, but it is nice to see them in suiteable habitat in this country.

I will endevour to keep a close eye on this site come next spring/summer to see if any of my hunches come to pass:)

PS: BTW this area is amazing for all types of wildlife, loads of duck, pheasants, buzzards, kestrels, skylarks, snipe etc. so fair play to the landowner for doing his bit for wildlife:cool:

Cool:cool: - hopefully these increased numbers of sighting leads to more breeders returning from Africa next year:)

Small grey partridge population in Lough Boora Offaly and birds from this population recently translocated to Oldtown North County Dublin. Further details from http://www.greypartridge.ie/ .
Alot of gunclubs release non-native Red legged Partridge for shooting.
