File sharing between Linux, OS X Lion and Windows

    Hi

I have a gigabit LAN/WLAN network setup with few Macs OS X Lion (mix of wired and wireless) and Windows 7 machines (all wired). The file server is running Ubuntu and sharing publicly two EXT4 partitions across the network using Samba protocol. See also http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056409923

Windows machines have good write/read speed over the shared storage (60-70Mbps) but the Macs are suffering slow data transfer rates. Not sure how to measure transfer rate in Mac but definitely it's a lot slower than those in Windows. This is disappointing as apart from sharing videos and media, we do a lot of backing up of RAW photos and HD video files.

I understand SAMBA is NOT exactly made for Mac, I've tried NFS which gave a bit of improvement to the Macs but in turn it halved Windows machines transfer rate.

Anyone has ideal configuration for this kind of set up, comments or suggestion to improve it?

The reason I am asking it here because the primary machines are those Mac OS X Lion laptops.

    Many thanks in advance.

    Cheers,
    M.

OS X Lion doesn't support SMB because Apple decided that the DHCAST128 authentication method was insufficient. NFS is your best option.

In my experience network shares and file transfers are faster when using the terminal rather than the GUI in OS X.

so is there any way to get this working on Lion?
have a few laptops running lion now that can't access server 2003 shares

For some reason apple always manage to screw up SAMBA when they update the OS. Have you searched the web and/or checked apples support pages. I would wager you are not alone.

/edit read SAMBA was ripped from lion for a series of reasons... Compile from source?

You could install Samba3 from the Mac Ports project. You would need to disable the Apple Samba implementation in order to use it.

What version of NFS did you try ?

I don't think LInux is your best option as a file server.

You should scrap using Ubuntu as the file server and run Solaris x86 instead.

I reckon you will see a big improvement doing that !

You could try running netatalk on the file server - it's an AFP server, the native sharing protocol for the mac.
