Sourcing a bolt cutters?

    Hi,

I left my bike locked to a lamp-post in a rather dodgy area in Dublin. When I was going to unlock it the key for my bike lock broke off, in the lock. So.. my bike is currently, eh, stranded.

I have no idea how to go about setting it free! Is there somewhere I can source a bolt cutters from or something, or how is this situation even approached?

My friend's bike lock is on the bike too at the moment, but like... it probably will get robbed if I leave it there for too long.

    Please help!

Rent the biggest one you can get from a tool hire place? Expensive to buy a good one.

You can get the fire brigade to cut the lock.

First you need to prove to the Gardai that you are the owner of the bike then when you have done this and the Gardai are with you at the place where the bike is locked call the DFB and they will carry out this service for you.

If you call the DFB and the Gardai are not present they will not cut the lock and will growl at you for waisting their time.

Also be sensible and do this at a civil hour of the day.

I presume the fire brigade will charge you for the service also...

I'd imagine a local car garage would have one?

They might be a cheaper callout than the firebrigade

There is no charge for this service from the fire brigade in Dublin. Outside of Dublin there may be a charge.

Just a note...... Firemen and women like sweets, so a box of roses would be a nice way to say thankyou :)

I recently had to get a U-Lock off my bike and found an angle grinder did the job very quickly and easily. If you can borrow one you'll be done in a jiffy but you will attract a lot of attention as it generates a stream of sparks.

The local bike thief can help you out :pac:

if it's a U lock, get car jack and you'll be able to pop it open. just stick it i betwenn and start winding.

or if its barrel lock apen works.

We had a thread a week or so back on a similar topic. TBH, we really don't want to be getting too graphic about how to overcome any security devices, although we recognise a quick google will probably come up with similar answers.

OP, what type of lock is it? - if it's a good U lock, you're talking some heavy-duty equipment that's already been mentioned. If it's something less secure I'm sure someone could drop you a quick PM rather than continue with a discussion on how to overcome locks in this thread

I saw a fire engine with flashing blue lights coming up Grafton St one day. They rolled over to a *VERY* embarrassed looking bike owner whose lock had jammed near the Stephen's Green Centre.

    you're joking right?

what kind of a fool calls the firebrigade to unlock their bike? It's a total waste of time and tax payers money. I also don't see why the cost of this service would be any different outside of dublin if there was such a service:rolleyes: typical dub attitude

Go rent a tool for the job and do it yourself. alternatively pay the local scum to remove it, they'll have it off in 2 minutes:D

The call to the fire brigade is better done by the Garda. The fire brigade will only do it if they have nothing better to be doing and will treat it as training.

It's a good idea to only use locks for which you have a spare key at home.

The actual cost of a call-out is probably higher on average down the country due to longer distances to the nearest fire station. But the reference to "cost" here is whether the person doing the calling is going to be charged: in Dublin, they are not, in many places down the country they are. This is up to (AFAIK) the local authority, so it does differ across the country. IIRC I learnt this from a thread about rescuing cats out of trees, a service in the same sort of category as bike lock breaking.

+1 it is a total waste of time and money doing this.

And btw its not a 'typical dub attitude’ about there being no charge in Dublin. Most if not all local authorities will charge you for calling out the fire brigade in an emergency but Dublin city don't.
