Iphone reboot -battery empty - or is it?

My 3GS is shutting down randomly and either going to what looks like a reboot except that I am not asked for my PIN, or straight to a battery empty screen, however when I plug the miserable excuse for a phone into a charger the battery reports as 80% charged.

I have done the full reset, IOS is at the latest version, installed as a new phone, almost all apps stripped out, fresh contact sync - i.e. no restored from a backup.

Is there anything left that I can do to turn my iphone back into a phone that can be depended upon to make a couple of calls?

Luckily enough I am out of contract and was thinking of going for a new iphone due to the number of apps that I have bought, but I am beginning to think that I would just be storing up the same trouble as there are already similar problem reports for the iphone 4 and that I cannot use the apps any way due to the constant crashing.

Problem seems solved by two factory resets from full battery, hasn't crashed for hours!

But the fact that I think that is a good thing and the ease that I was able to drag and drop wirelessly my music etc. onto my normally work stuff only work phone (Galaxy S) while the kids were having their breakfast this morning has really made me realise that I just don't need the hassle.

So on the way home I went into Three and got a Samsung Galaxy S2!

I will probably just load up angry birds and let the kids work away with the 3GS, seems to be all it is good for since 4.3.
