No McAfee why does it make a difference and does it sound like a virus ??

No it's not a virus but I think it might be the anti phishing software from your antivirus. Would you consider using a different browser like:
    google Chrome: http://www.google.com/chrome
    Or
    Firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/

McAfee is rubbish, ditch it and get Microsoft Security Essentials (Its free), to try solve your problem disable addons in IE9 until you find the culprit, you can do this from Tools>Manage addons. Disable one at a time see if it fixes it. To see if its an addon first you can start explorer in safe mode, Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (No Addons).
You could also reset IE9 settings to default, to do this click Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Reset to reset to default settings, look to addons first though

Try Internet Explorer "No Addons" mode I mentioned above and see if it helps first, afaik yes such data will be erased, I know if you download firefox you can import this data automatically from IE
