When it is very cold in the mornings? Looking for suggestions for a hat that can be worn under helmet.

Surely it's "What do you WAS on your head?" :)
I usually go all "Scotsman" on this and wear nothing but when it's raining I wear a baseball cap. Northface (I think) do a waterproof pac-lite one which is nice though any one will do. Lots of companies give 'em away for promotions so they're free too. They're not too warm and the peak stop the rain getting in my eyes.
In the snow I wear a thin Thinsulate bobble hat (without the bobble). Got two of them in a pound shop in the UK during the cold snap last December.

I usually wear a baseball hat but if the rain is heavy I wear wide brimmed aussie hat made of wax cotton. Standard beanie if its cold.

I don't know what goes effectively with a helmet, but in the summer a stiff- and shallow-brimmed sun hat if it's sunny. In the winter, a beanie (or tuque, as I like to call it) if it's cold. Otherwise, nothing.

You can get specific head caps to wear with helmets that do the job, keep you warm etc. Try your LBS or online.

I go for a headband which keeps the back of the neck and the ears warm and fits snugly under the helmet.

Ears are particularly painful in the cold

When it gets cold (sub zero), replace the normal buff with a winter buff, with the fleecy bit for the ears - but even in the snow last winter, that was often too hot, with all the extra work ploughing thru the ice & snow.

I wear an Endura Thermolite Skullcap
I find it great for keeping my head, and especially my ears warm.

I used to wear a full head of hair, sadly I am doing this less and less nowadays

    +1 on the Thermolite Skullcap.

When it's really cold I also use a pair of these. They're great for keeping the ears warm, don't restrict hearing too much, and, if you're not worried about hearing, have a little space for earphones. Because the strap goes behind your head they fit fine with a helmet.

I've seen them in 53 Degrees North in Blanch, but I'm sure similar outdoorsy shops have them.

Yeah, I used a skullcap last year, think it's DHB, pretty puch identical to the endura one. Wore it in the coldest conditions last year. -8 I think was the coldest morning I cycled. You don't really need any hefty headgear tbh. The headwind is indirect and rain for the most part is kept off your ears by the helmet, so any light cap which covers your ears should be sufficient.

I use a motorbike balaclava I got from Aldi a few years ago whenever it gets cold. I tend to get ear aches so it helps with that no end.

I saw Aldi & Lidl both have lycra running hats in the next week or so which might do:

+1 for the Buff. They're very versatile, and quite thin, and so fit under the helmet no problem. When it's really cold, I configure it like a balaclava, so that only my eyes are exposed.

Light skiing balaclava that works a neck warmer but can be pulled up as full balaclava if it gets cold enough.

There comes a point where you get cold enough that you do not give a FIG how ridiculous you look as long as its warm :)
