Like a lot of inventions the credit for it is widely contested.

The truth is like most things nobody really invented it as such. Several people in various countries happened to be working on the concept of electric lighting around the same times and Edisons version was the one which proved commercially successful.

Many of Edisons later "inventions" were actually the work of people employed by him.

Sometime around the middle of the 20th century people stopped "inventing" things* and companies took over.

    * With the possible exception of Napster and that clockwork radio dude ?

    Correct!
Swan invented the bulb but Edison made it into a commercial success and invented district lighting using electricity.
I think Edison also invented the first distribution grid but then he didn't have that mad biddy from Tullamore to contend with.

I think Edison also invented the first distribution grid.

Only worked on (relatively) low voltage DC though which is where Tesla came in.

Tesla was a fine example of the old cliche about there being a fine line between genius and insanity what with his attempts to transmit electric power via radio later evolving into even wierder stuff about death rays.

They say he put put extra legs at the back of his chair to stopping him from falling over, which would have proved very useful for many of us people who like to sit back on our chairs and also invented the Electric Hammer. Of course he never mentioned any of this for some reason so it's all really just a rumor.

    Edison Patented the lightbulb.
As for invention, a handful of people came up with lightbulbs, none as reliable as Edison bulb.
And Edison is a dick, he electrocuted an elephant to death!
