Very Green on all this so bear with me pls..:D Have read the sticky thread but just want to get a basic overwiew of layout.

Want to set up wifi in the house using Meteor Broadband to Go.....
    eg. Meteor Hotshot modem.

Currently use my basic dongle in summer in the Box Room in front of house and this is where I get the strongest signal.

In winter I use it in the kitchen downstairs in the back of house but signal not quite as reliable but suits me fine.

Aim: to connect 2 laptops to use mainly just for general surfing/email/forums bit of you tube viewing.

I think a router might be best and based in the boxroom.

then the two laptops could be used downstairs or anywhere via their wifi connections.

How do I use the Meteor Hotshot modem with a Router, do I just plug it in to a usb conn or can the sim be used on its on.

Am I on the right track here....

Yup you can get both. A router that you put a sim in and a router that you can connect your dongle too :pac: ...that will then distribute the interwebs via ethernet or WiFi

3 for eg. use the huawei 260a router which you stick the sim into and works as a normal router

or the dovado type routers - http://commsoft.ie/shop/dovado.php ...whick you can just plug a usb dongle into... there is some hybrid routers that allow both ways

Give a google of 3g routers and you'll get some ideas. I'm sure folk here have tried and tested a few of them, but the Dovado routers get good praise

I have the huawei 260a router on the roof with a sim in it that runs down a cat5 cable into the main house router, works aok with 2 wifi hotspots being broadcasted from both routers via the 3 network sim

thanks al good advice there. Now just trying to find the cheapest way of getting into this.

    Meteor's Hotspot
    hotspot.jpg

costs €69 but cant find out what brand or model number this is in order to see if I could pick up a second hand or unlocked one if they exist as this afaik is a fairly new gadget...well for meteor anyway. I'm guessing its a huawai but what model number!

Any advice on cheapest way (for now) to get up and running using a router would be much appreciated!

For home use, the mifi modem wouldn't be the best option. It's designed for mobility. If you need a home router, then buy a fixed router that you plug your modem into. There's a sticky at the top of the forum.

The mifi modems are available unlocked on eBay.
