Strymon Pedals

A LOT of interest in these, in certain circles, so I thought I'd start a thread where we discuss them and, trade tricks, and best deals, etc.

I'm personally getting a Strymon el Capistan delay, and an expression pedal to control it, next week... we're playing a show, and I sold my old delay to fund this (a Maxon AD999 - sweeeeet pedal in it's own right) so the Strymon better show up or I'm Captain Screwed.

    At any rate....

...here's a run down of the pedals.

Might as well post my first Strymon first, the el Capistan delay.
    http://www.strymon.net/products/elcapistan/

    el_capistan_angle.jpg

    Overview:

It's meant to emulate three different types of analogue tape delays. A multi-head (eg Space Echo), fixed head (e.g. kind of like a normal tape machine) and moveable head (eg Echoplex)

    Great review here:
    http://www.harmonycentral.com/docs/DOC-1982

    Some video

It also has a 20 second looper function.

As you can tell, this thing can produce a WIDE variety of sounds... and is almost infinitely tweakable...

...oh and it ALSO has a built in spring reverb effect. Wow!

The expression pedal can control any of the primary knob-controllable functions of the pedal. I say primary, because each of the 5 knob has a "hidden" secondary function (like the amount of spring reverb, or the "bias" of the "tape machine").

    So excited.

These things run about 279 online... in fact most of the Stymon pedals are 279, except the TIMEline, which is over 400.

The first thing wanted from Strymon was actually a reverb pedal, called the blueSKY reverberator.

    bluesky_angle.jpg
    http://www.strymon.net/products/bluesky/

I wanted one after seeing this video.

It's sounds are based on three different modes, Plate, Room and Spring. Each of those can run in three modes, Mod (which adds chorus to the reverb), Norm(al)and shimmer (which is the sound you heard in that first video...

What an amazing sound... I'll quote from the manual, to explain what the "shimmer mode does":
Shimmer mode adds regenerative octave up pitch shifting “in the tank” for a reverb trail that rises into the clouds with a plate. For Spring and Room shimmer, an octave plus a fifth is regeneratively introduced.

    Amazing!

I basically decided against it as my new amp has amazing reverb and I'd only be using one part of the pedal... but what a sound!

Here's a look at a bunch pf the functionality... some really unique stuff!

This pedal is true stereo (in and out). All Strymon pedals run internally at 24/96... amazing!

I'm sure I'll own one some day ;)

My El Cap is arriving next week too :)
I had already one and i sold my entire pedalboard in May but with the explicit intention of buying some of the pedals back when i could afford them.

The El Capistan is without any doubt the nicest delay pedal out there in my opinion.Every function is really good which is why i wouldn't bother with the new Strymon Timeline pedal as the "El Cap" section lacks all of the functions of the standalone pedal.
The multi head setting is simply out of this world as is the ability to dial in the wow and flutter.

You're gonna love it and I suspect that the Aquapuss will find it's way back onto Adverts when your El Cap arrives.;)

I also had (and intend to buy again) the Strymon Lex.Another great pedal.

They are a great company, the Apple of guitar pedals. What's notable is the absence of any fuzz or overdrive pedals in their product line as the market is saturated with them and they are more interested in pursuing innovative ideas.
That Pete Celi guy is a wizard.

I only heard about these guys lately, seems like really nice pedals. I wouldn't mind getting a delay from them, but it would be a while before I could really justify it!

The Maxon AD999 is already gone to make space... I unfortunately told the guy who bought it about the Strymon ... now he wants one of those!

Yeah a lot of pedal builders are using the "tape delay" sound as a selling point for their delay pedals but the only company who actually set out to really nail that sound it are Strymon.

If you find you don't use the Expression pedal much then i'd recommend the favourite switch.Railhead effects make one which is cheaper than the Strymon and it's also really small.2 x 2 inches...

Thanks for that. I'm hoping I'll use the expression, but I'm kinda not sure how. ;)

Does it store the favourite internally, or do you need to reset it everytime you boot up the pedal?

Ever played a blueSKY? That's next on the list I think. Either that or the Effectrode Tube Drive.

It stores it internally so you won't need to reset it after switching it off.
I've never played a Bluesky.I'm gonna get the Eventide Space instead.

I think I'd need two for the different tube variations! ;)

It does sound killer though... esp with lower gain tubes...

getting the Strymon today via Niall over at www.themusicoutlet.ie

They seem to be the ONLY place in Ireland that can get these in... same price as Thomann...

Also seem to be able to get MOST of the boutique stuff online... Empress, Effectrode, DBA, etc., etc.

He has to special order it in, so it takes about a week, but... he DOES take laser and WILL be getting a lot more of my money... I didn't mention it until he actually did what he said, with no hassles... seriously, this is a great secret if you're into pedals!
