Hi there, Im back to ye with yet another problem with my 2006 vw passat parking brake... this time the parking brake wont engage what so ever, with all the usual christmas lights on the dash board, and a very annoying bing bing every second I drive. I got it hooked up to diagnostics and I discovered the following

supply voltage left park brake motor

    " " right " " "

    error codes 02433

Any ideas where I go from here bar the nice people at VW Ireland.

    Thanks in advance!!!

    For me first things first.

Check fuse and change fuse. Right panel of drivers side of dashboard. Passats didn't come with a Fuse Drawing in the manual. Mine doesn't. It says "Fuse panels always changing so you should contact dealer(yeah right)" Google your model and year for a diagram.

    Failing that seek professional help.

The motor housing on the caliper is plastic and prone to cracking and allowing water in. In my experience this is the usual cause of your fault.

When plugged into decent diagnostics you can carry out the basic settings on the EBP system and also try activating each motor seperatly to confirm the problem.

A replacement caliper is not cheap though, somewhere in the region of 400-500 from VW.

They have a handle that needs to be incorparated in to the interior. Getting rid of it eliminates small problems in a lot of cars like armrests being down making it awkward to operate etc. The centre console can be neater .

Normal handbrakes can be unreliable too.

Plenty. I really like the one on the Missus Scenic. `Turn the care off, it engages itself. Start and drive off and it disengages.

New cars with actual handbrakes are getting few and far between nowadays.

It does free up more space in between the seats by not having a lever there, but I do wish they would standardise the location and whether it's push to engage or pull.

Ive a 2010 vw golf diesel and has both and 'normal' handbreak and an armrest that doesn't interfere with the handbreak. but i see where you are coming from.

I have a 2011 opel astra on loan at the moment and it has this. I found it annoying at first but it is good in some ways, when it works.
It is good for learner drivers as it makes hillstarts so simple, you just drive off and it auto-disengages.
Makes handbrake turns impossible though, maybe this is part of the thinking behind it.

im having the same problem as well, this only happens every now and again though. I recently changed my wheels on the car so i am wondering if this would have anything to do with it. I went from 16" wheels to 17" wheels. when it happens it is usually in the morning and the parking brake not release with a beeping noise as well, TBH i usually just take the key out of the ignition and put it back again and this usually sorts it but is not a long term fix.

What about the simple pleasures of a handbrake turn on loose gravel?

Reason enough to stick with the old system methinks!

Hey Guys, I'm having the same problem. Does it relate to steering column lock? If I disconnect battery will it release brake and stop light flashing and beeping.

It's either the actual button you push to operate the handbrake or one of the 2 calipers. Instead of the hocus pocus bring it to a mechanic its the only solution.
