Wayne Rooney's father arrested in SPL betting probe
England arrived in Podgorica this afternoon with the build-up for Friday’s pivotal euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro overshadowed by the arrest of Wayne Rooney’s father and uncle.

    By Jeremy Wilson, in Podgorica
    2:25PM BST 06 Oct 2011
Wayne Rooney Snr, the England striker's father, and Richie Rooney were among nine men held this morning, along with Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity in a Scottish Premier League match.
Rooney is in the England squad for tomorrow’s game and his current state of mind is sure to dominate questioning at a press conference later this afternoon involving manager Fabio Capello and captain John Terry.
England need only a point against Montenegro to be sure of winning Group G and qualifying for the European Championship finals in Poland and Ukraine next summer.
In a statement, SFA chief executive Stewart Regan said Jennings and Rooney’s father and uncle had been arrested following "extensive enquiries" into alleged betting irregularities during the SPL game between Motherwell and Hearts on Dec 14, 2010.
During the match Jennings, who had already been booked, was shown a straight red card for foul and abusive language aimed at referee Stevie O'Reilly late in the 2-1 home defeat.
The 26-year-old, who is from Liverpool and joined Motherwell from Tranmere two years ago, has denied any wrongdoing.
Regan said: "It is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match.
Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course."
Merseyside Police, who carried out the arrests, said: "Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity.
"The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives.
    "Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow."

    from the telegraph website

Now thats a bit crazy, with all the scrutiny on footy these days for people to make such amatuer mistakes (new account with a 500 quid bet on a red card). Especially when that pay off woulda been 5 grand (i know there were other bets too but it can't have added up to to much)

Sorry i realised that the above story has no mention of the 500 quid bet, i got the story in an email and wanted to verfify online but couldn't find exact article but here is the email text
Football betting scandal: Wayne Rooney's dad nicked EXCLUSIVE
Published 12:29 06/10/11 By Paul Byrne

Wayne Rooney’s father was arrested today in connection with an alleged football betting scam. The Manchester United striker's uncle Richie, 54, was also detained by police.
The two men were among nine who were detained by police in Merseyside and Glasgow. It is understood Wayne Rooney senior, 48, was arrested at his home in the West Derby area of Liverpool.
The development comes after a nine month investigation into the sending off of Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, 26. The former Tranmere Rovers player was also arrested in connection with the betting probe today.

    Scottish FA release statement
    " "
The Kirkby-born footballer was arrested by Merseyside police on behalf of the Gambling Commission at his home in Glasgow. He was one of nine people arrested, the other eight being detained at addresses on Merseyside.
After being booked for a foul early on in the game Jennings was shown a straight red card for putting his hand on referee Stevie O’Reilly and arguing when a penalty appeal was turned down in the 83rd minute of the SPL clash.
Jennings is alleged to have asked O’Reilly when he was going to stop “cheating” Motherwell. But questions were raised by bookies when it emerged that several bets were made on a player being sent off including a £500 gamble placed through a new account opened in Liverpool at 10/1 odds.
Two members of the Association of British Bookmakers, including online betting company Blue Square, reported concerns the day after the match.
In a statement SFA chief executive Stewart Regan attributed the information to the Gambling Commission and said the arrest follows “extensive inquiries” into alleged betting irregularities at a Scottish Premier League match.
Mr Regan added: “While the investigation involves several other individuals outside Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match.
“Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course.
“The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage.
”Merseyside Police said: “Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity.
“The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives.
    “Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow.
“The investigation relates to a match between Motherwell and Hearts on December 14 2010.”

Doesn't Rooney make five grand a second or something. Does he not get on with his Da?

John Terry's Da is caught selling coke and his Ma caught shoplifting. It's a wonder Rooney and Terry turned out to be such model citizens. Fair play.

Don't think it's that amteurish really. Unless one of them admits to it, it's very difficult to prove.

I think the Police must feel they have a case the boy Jennings was arrested last year after a game with hearts where it's alleged there was strange betting in the score of the game and Jennings getting sent off. I don't know if there is footage anywhere but if there is it will show Jennings swearing at the Ref and to be honest a lot of People at the time wondered why he reacted the way he did.

Oh and in case it hasn't been posted Jennings is a scouser so you never know he may know the Rooney's

just showed the clip of the sending off on sky news. he was already on a yellow card with a few minutes left in the game when he started giving abuse to the ref. extremely dodgy looking alright!

It probably not for the money, more the excitement on realising that your bet has won. Its hard enough to predict a win let alone a handicap score, I cannot imagine the excitement Mr. Rooney and co must have felt when the alleged player was just about to get his red card.

Out of respect for his son, Wayne Rooney's dad has said that he will not be making any comment about his arrest until after England's 1-1 draw with Montenegro tonight.

I'm not defending it. It's a bad thing to do, sad to see match-fixing(to an extent) coming in in the UK, but it's not as if he swindled some poor unsuspecting Liverpudlian out of a few grand, it was a bookies, ffs.

"Oh God, how will the bookies ever get it back", clearly sarcasm and belittling the thievery of Rooneys father.

What, and because they tak in and give out lots of money it makes it okay?

No, I was actually belittling the "Oh won't someone think of the children" type response from the 'Boozler with a hint of sarcasm.

Again, with the putting words into my posts. They're in that game so they obviously know the risks involved, whereas, let's be honest here, a charity wouldn't expect to be robbed.
