You can thank Berlusconi and his party for this utter daftness.
I expect the daft law to be fought in the European courts by someone.

It was brought in so that the public would shut up about him and his antics.

What a disgrace, would expect nothing less from that Italian government to be honest.

That's mad, I was just looking up the Wikipedia page for this fella and I couldn't get any info on him, that's the reason why so

The internet hasn't been completely free in a long time.

German, France and Italy got Google and eBay to filter search results to limit Nazi memorabilia from popping up.

I'm sure there's loads more similar cases of censorship.

Who Controls The Internet, good book on the subject.

The Net Delusion is also a decent book on it.

This is just a transparent act of censorship. I sometimes wonder how much it happens in Ireland, as seen on this site.

Are you comparing Nazi memorabilia to Child Porn?

    There is a slight difference.

Im starting to think the same. I was shocked when china started banning google and facbook and those kinds of things, but actually I now see it makes sense in lots of ways

Well, you could make an argument that censorship is inherently bad, and it's the existence of child pornography (and instructions on how to make bombs etc.) that is the real problem.

The site allows users to post their version sometimes of alleged events - sometimes without factual evidence to back their stuff up.

The whole matter is well explained here: http://italychronicles.com/italys-politicians-try-to-ban-blogs-again/

Censorship IS inherently bad, if you don't want to read something do not read it. give the censors an inch and they'll be burning books after that. People are never happy.

Ahhhh the poor unfortunate powerful people doesn't like what the small guy can say about them, well that's just to bad.

I don't think anyone takes blogs or discussion boards to seriously, you are aware they are free comments and not from journos or news outlets that can be sued.

Tell that to your lawyer when you get shopped for defamation!

All of these articles cite the "holders" with the keys to the root DNS domains. DNS is a high level portion of the Internet used only for name resolution, I am talking more the nuts and bolts infrastructure. Anything from layer 3 down was funded mostly from Government issued grants. DNS isn't technically essential.

The point being that which you might have missed and I think mentioned in a few of those (and many other similar sources of info on the net), if something happened to the internet and someone decided to shut it own - there is others out there that can restart it.
DARPA can try now what they like in trying to attempt censorship - then they will be bypassed and this was allowed by international agreement.

I get what you're saying. For the vast majority of people, an ICANN DNS ****up would cause absolute havoc for the vast majority of users. However, the "deep web" would not be affected by any means. People that venture into the deep don't really need the DNS root servers at all. The real dark side of the internet won't be listed under the DNS system, you can bet on that.

I get what your saying too - hopefully those parts are being watched with fair mindedness and balance.
Its all we can hope for.

Back on topic, I hope this stupid law being tried to be introduced, will be blocked as it conflicts clearly with their constitution.

    Ha
They can sue me for defamation they will get about the price of lunch or their busfare home out of me.

Believe me, it wouldn't be worth their while.

Besides there is always the defence, "that wasn't me who wrote that" but it's your IP address, so,, it still wasn't me who wrote it. Impossible to prove.

We can hope:D Somehow I doubt it though...

You are 100% correct though, it contravenes the rights afforded within their constitution. Therefore, unless some change to the constitution is made, the decision should not be seriously entertained. I think enough opposition will stop this going through, personally.

They're being watched aright but people on the onion network are pretty damn hard to track. Without seizing physical assets, the authorities can only tell that you're IN the deep web, not what you're doing there.

I used to think Silvio was great craic altogether what with all his Bunga Bunga and bad hair plugs, but my girlfriend who is Italian opened my eyes to the man.

He is basically Europe's Ghadaffi. The man is pure scum to the bone.

I cant believe the Italian people have not revolted en masse against him, they are an intensely proud people, and this gimp is making Italy a laughing stock..

Those people can use http too for dodgy stuff without the authorities knowing what is going on at face value. Not smart though.

No doubt that this will spread right throughout Europe.

The EU have a habit of robbing ideas from member states and expanding on them. This has already happened with Data Retention directives when Ireland and the UK were fore runners.

To the contary, censorship simply pushes pedos and extremists underground. look up freenet and darknets. police are powerless to track these highly sofisticated encrypted networks that run on top of the internet.

There are countless exapmles of politicians implementing a 'save the children' style secret blacklists of terrorists and pedos for the internet, that are almost immediately expanded to include sites of political opposition, protest, file sharing, blasfamy.

Even here on boards.ie, for years people were not permitted to discuss gigs and events managed by the company MCD for fear legal action. More than anything it is this mentality of 'self censorship' that young people seem to have that troubles me. People disrespect their freedom by not excercising it.
