New Clubs and Distance

Recently changed my irons last month and seem to have a funny problem. I've gone to the range now 5 times and have tried to dial in the yardages with the new clubs.

I'm finding that I'm hitting the 9,P,W further(5-10yards) but my mid/long Irons are coming up significantly shorter. I was hitting old 8 iron 155-160 but I'm needing a 6iron now to get to 160

I've gone from using 10 year old blades to a new set of Titleist AP1's

Can it all be put down to different lofts?even though I'm longer with short irons?

    Any ideas?

Are they original AP1's and are you sure? A mate of mine has copy AP1's and they look very very real.
Some of the copies out there do some strange stuff, generally down to the poor quality and non uniform shafts throughout the set.

You could compare loft specs of both sets if you can get them for your old blades, or physically measure them with a protractor.

Other then that it could be the wrong shaft flex for your swing speed.

    Thanks Irish Bloke

Not concerned that the clubs are a copy at this stage given that the source was reputable.

Just compared the lofts on both sets and the AP1's have a lower loft spec on each club!!????

Not really techy but while that might explain the extra distance on the short irons it confused me more on the long irons

Would the wrong shaft be more of an issue with mid/long irons or should it be consistent throughout the set?

Could it be something as simple as the quality of the strike contact ? Tho in saying that, if you've changed from blades to AP1 (game improvement iron) it's probably not an issue

The other thing I would mention, is that there isn't a uniform increase in distance for each club .. they're not bracketed as say 15 yard multiples. I hit 7iron 171, 6iron 182 & 5iron 203 as maximum distances

Thanks. It may be down to just getting use to them a little more I guess

Were u fitted for the shafts? It may be they are the wrong shaft for u it may not be noticable in the short irons where u are not maybe hitting a full shot and the extra loft would be making up the difference. But when u get down to full shots on the long irons it maybe having a effect.

To be able to play blades and hit an 8 iron 160 yards (I assume you mean carry) you would be minimum steel stiff flex to x-stiff with most shaft manufactures.

Kick point (high, mid, low) can also affect trajectory causing a possible difference in carry from your old shafts to your new ones.

Why don't you compare your old shafts vs. your new ones to see the difference in specs?

+ 1 on the shafts. I've switched from Callaway X-20s with a uniflex to Titleist AP2s with a stiff shaft and I'm finding a distance increase of almost 10%. It wasn't a uniform increase across all the clubs but when I compared the lofts, only the 3-5 irons had identical lofts and from 6 up, the AP2s had slightly more loft.
But as a comparison, look at the specs on these clubs:

I wouldn't be worried about hitting my 4 iron as long someone playing the new R11 irons ;)
As long as you're getting consistent distances with each iron, I wouldn't spend too much time thinking about it.

    Thanks for reply guys

I understand the shaft concerns but although I've not ever been measured for iron swing speed my driver swing speed was measured last year an is 101 which average i believe and using the web to look at some analysis seems to put me safely in the regular iron shaft range?I do have Stiff shaft on my driver
