Sad news indeed. Many people love to hate Apple, but no company has been as innovative and game changing as they have. Jobs was a central part of this, and he will be missed. RIP.

iv only been a mac user for a year, could only afford windows previously but always liked what apple did im only 20 and my first mp3 wasnt an ipod but i remember that xmas i got one, i was fascinated how differant it was from my old creative mp3, then to having an ipod touch and an iphone its was amazing the differances they had compared to other brands, even my switch from pc to mac, dont get me wrong i still use windows for work but i love when i come home and i can use the mac and how simple it is and this was all because of Steve, in my mind he is a visionary and i do believe he changed technoligy and he made it magical, because apple products work, and it doesnt matter how? its just magic so thank you Steve for everything you did for technoligy, im proud to say i was alive while you were.

Got my first Mac in 1992 (LCII) and have been enjoying them ever since. I remember the crazy times around 1995 when Jobs was out and Apple really looked as if they had lost their way with the Copland debacle - many people were seriously considering what platform we'd move to if Apple disappeared - a prospect that was looking increasingly likely (BeOS was an option, and I always fancied an SGI O2).

Then Jobs was brought back in when Apple acquired NeXT, and suddenly, things started looking up again. But no-one expected the meteoric rebirth of the company that Jobs inspired. He was a true visionary.

    RIP, Steve

RIP Steve. The iPod converted me from a person who mostly ignored Macs and knew very little about them to someone now who loves his mac and all of the other Apple gear that I have. The stuff just works and he had the vision and drive to do that and the ability to say that things were below par at times and stand by that. Because of that we've all got better computing products today.

When people in the future look back in time on the Tech Revolution, Jobs' name will be remembered as we remember Brunnel now for his contribution to the Industrial Revolution.

He challenged himself and the world to ask "there must be a better way?"

Truly brave in the face of the unknown.

Posted this in the Media Devices forum. Thought i'd share here too.

Apple's iconic "Think Different" ad campaign,

The version that didn't air. Narrated by Steve Jobs. Amazing ad in my opinion.

Very sad news indeed. What a legacy he left behind though, he accomplished so much more in his 56 years than others would in multiple life times. He'll be missed.

    RIP Steve.

If you think about any one of the genuinely innovative products which changed the world we live in and has made life better that he has given the world it is amazing; when you consider that they all came from the wisdom and direction of him, it staggers belief that it all comes from one man, let alone one company.

We can begin to list them all from major things like GUI, OS X which made stable computing at home a reality, iPod which reinvented how we listen to and buy music, iPhones that have made pocket computing practical, the many specialist softwares that are used in photo/film/TV/recording/pharmaceuticial/scientific industries and the countless other trade improvements and products that he has led the way with but to be honest, we'd find it hard to stop.

Rest in Peace, Mr Jobs and thank you for everything.

Still get goosebumps from that ad. I used to love the big pictures on the walls up in Hollyhill of the people from the ad. New people into Apple used to be pretty gobsmacked at the 1984 advert as well.

He was a man who made personal computing available to the shallow, lazy and un-intelligent, he designed computers to turn people into paying consumers of stuff that was once free, reduced the revenue stream, rights and creativity of software developers with his fenced garden model of software distribution. Obfuscated the way his computers operated from the common user to keep them docile in ignorant sheep. He attacked competitors with cynical software patent and law IP suits, rather than improving his own products to compete. He was a master of planned obsolescence, waste and environmental destruction by not having removable batteries in his mp3 players and phones, which he had PR people cover up with jargon about minimum packaging and aluminium cases.

IMO his companies wasteful, selfish, money hungry business model is the archetype of all of the contributing factors currently leading the ultimate decline of western civilisation as a whole.

But for all his shortcommings he was a damn nice guy, and in In Silicone Valley that's a true rarity. I may not agree with him, but I respect him for running his company his own way. and for not being half as evil as Steve Ballmer, Larry Page, Mark Zuccerberg, Larry Ellison.

    RIP Steve.

that describes about every CEO in the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,775 ✭✭✭Spacedog

Perhaps with a few exceptions (e.g. Mark Shuttleworth), but Jobs is widely regarded the best CEO. Don't get me wrong, Jobs was a great man, I say this despite the great difference of opinion regarding approaches to business and technology. but that's another discussion for another time and place.

Soap boxing in an obituary thread for the former CEO of Apple in a Mac forum is bad enough, but really you really come across as arrogant in the parts I've marked in bold.

I always find people who whinge like that are the same people who do nothing about it. Are you one of those people?

Here's hoping that Apple can be as inovative and forward thinking in the future as it was under his leadership.

If it hadn't been for that little software company starting up in a Cupertino garage in 1984, how many of us would have a computer in our homes today, and all the attendant communications advances that were influenced by Steve Jobs.

I've never owned a single Apple product.

But, you have to admire Steve Jobs. He had his own view, his own way, and a vision.

He will be greatly missed and his innovation will be a major loss to the world and especially to Apple.

    RIP Steve Jobs.

How knowledgeable are you if you don't know the difference between the basic constituent material of a microchip and that of a fake boob?

Silicon Valley is where the computer companies are.

Silicone Valleys are those canyons to be found in front of Jordan, Pamela Anderson, Lolo, Cher, etc etc etc

But ultimately, if any single individual deserves the honor, I would have to cast my vote for the obvious choice, Steve Jobs, because the Macintosh never would have happened without him, in anything like the form it did. Other individuals are responsible for the actual creative work, but Steve's vision, passion for excellence and sheer strength of will, not to mention his awesome powers of persuasion, drove the team to meet or exceed the impossible standards that we set for ourselves. Steve already gets a lot of credit for being the driving force behind the Macintosh, but in my opinion, it's very well deserved.
