iPhone 4 Data usage and O2 ..Help!

    Hello,

I am aware there is an O2 forum but this issues doesn't really concern them for now.

Basically my friend is a savy low data usage person. Knows only to us the phone on wifi for updates etc. Looking at the average usage bills over the past few months it is about 7-10 MB a day.

There is no streaming TV on 3G etc.

But all of a sudden there was one days usage of 700MB

Not that was two months ago and we argued the toss with O2 and they said that that is what their records showed for that day.

So roll on to this months and once again it has happened, only this time it is showing 500MB of usage for the day. Data roaming is turned off by the way.

My friend is adamant that they could never have used that type of data off wifi. Hell even I know that apps wont up date off wifi if the update is over 20 (ish)mb

O2 are adamant that the Data usage was valid. So that leaves the phone doing something in the back ground on the day?

If anyone could provide any pointers on this one it would be really appreciated. Like apps that do stuff in the background or something?

    Help? :(

I suppose the best answer is "the usual" like google maps and the general stuff a lot of people have.

We now reckon that what is happening is that when a sleep the phone is turning off wifi and using 3G but what would use 700MB in one day and nothing for two months. And 700MB as a silent update or push?

It all just seem whacko to me :/

You can download a data monitor and that can tell 3G vs WIFI data and times etc then compare it maybe to O2 and see if you can pinpoint it further.
Some apps use push notifications, internet connection etc 24/7 pretty much.

If your phone goes into standby, even with wifi on and connected, I read on here before that the app will use 3G if in standby.
If you come out of standby you can very quickly see the icon changing from 3G to WIFI

OH had the same experience on VF recently. Luckily it was toward the end of the billing cycle so we picked it up and queried immediately when we received the bill but were similarly brushed off.

From memory it was about 700+MB of usage after 11.30pm at home when the wifi was on and we are pretty much positive that the phone was just sitting around unused at that time of night.

Thankfully it appears to have been a once off freak occurance but it cost over €30  on the bill.
