    Hi all,

I'm thinking of buying an 2006 golf gt tdi with 92k miles but some people are telling me not to and to go for the 1.9tdi as they give MUCH less trouble with the engine.
THEY SAY THE 2.0 LITRE GIVES PLENTY OF TROUBLE
i like the 140bhp and 6sp gearbox but dont like the idea of the engine blowing up later on

    any advice appreciated

Dont mind them, its "barstool knowledge" to a degree.

If it ticks all your boxes and has been very well maintained, you should be trouble free.

some of the 140s gave trouble with oil pumps i think it was. the 1.9 would be a more proven engine.

The 1.9 is more reliable, the 2.0 gave lots of trouble with fuel injectors. Stay away from it in my opinion. The engine won't blow up on you just give you a hefty four figure bill if the injectors go.

Is this engine the common rail version?
I thought the were a bit better, reliability wise?

was it not only the 170bhp that gave injector trouble

No it was the 140 bhp. I've seen people get used injectors anything from 100 euro up to 800 euro new from Vw.

I'd still buy a 1.9 tdi over it though, any day.

I had a six speed 140bhp A4 for a few days, wasn't wonderful really, I'd go 1.9 too really. The oil pump is a significant concern with them, I wouldn't worry so much about injectors, not the end of the World.

And the hefty bill for injectors? It's a pretty serious concern with the 2 litre PD engine on safety as well as cost grounds. The car could loose power without notice when one fails. If you're in the middle of an overtake that could be the end of your world.

In comparison to a failed oil pump the injector bill isn't hefty.

Well your post wasn't too clear on that:) A €100 injector is a very, very rare thing mind.

Not really, it was from a scrappy up North, come to think of it it may have been £100 pound.

It would appear that the bill for all four injectors can cost upwards of €3000 in many cases outlined on that thread...

Price a new 140bhp engine fitted from a VW dealer to see the upwards cost of a failed oil pump ;)

Given my HJ comment a few days ago the HJ link from yourself is amusing :pac:

    Why what would it cost?

Ah yeah but that comment by yourself was just needless and silly really, again I have been following that thread for months now and thought it would be of use to the OP.

    For what its worth...

I can vouch for the expense if Injectors go south.

My case: 2.0L 170BHP Diesel BMN Engine code. Year: 2007 Full service history, 49000Miles

Stopped dead at 60MPH losing all braking/steering etc. Luckily forced steered it to safety.
One injector diagnosed, then told all 4 injectors needed changing plus the wiring loom. And VW blamed bad diesel:eek:

Skoda Main Stealer quoted over €3k to repair.

Car still in limbo just sitting. Will not started with the duff injector. Only seems to affected the Siemens Piezo Injectors. They changed part number early 2008.

Now I'm in the process of getting Indy specialist to do it.

Also note VW (vw,audi, skoda, seat) are replacing them FOC over in the UK.

So just do your research on the car. I don't know if the same can be said for the 140Bhp or not.

The 2.0 TDi PD was the same in all these cars and the same problems were happening across the range.

Go for the 1.9 TDi and get it remapped, it's not without problems but they are less frequent and it's a less complex design.

I would have thought a good bit more than €3000 :)

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Audi-VW-Skoda-Seat-Golf-A3-2-0-16V-TDI-Engine-BKD-A1-Video-Engine-Running-/110741400044?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item19c8b3a9ec#ht_2249wt_952

    That's a 2nd hand one, asking £1350 :)

A Mark 5 Golf 1.9 won't have a six speed gearbox unless you go for the automatic (DSG).

hi i didnt think so either but was told if i could get the mk5 golf sport model it would have it, dont like the auto's

No manual has a six speed box. If it's a Sport (UK spec) or Sportline (Irish spec) they all have 5 speed boxes with the 1.9tdi. There were Mark 4's (98-04) that had 6 speed boxes however.

Only the 2.0l 170Bhp engine is giving trouble with injectors. My FR is sitting in the garage at the moment with one gone. £520 for each injector. However Seat have agreed to change the faulty injectors.

I am driving a 2008 GT Sport (140bhp) at the moment, lovely car. Giving 49mpg.

I have also owned a 150bhp 1.9Tdi Leon, they can give plenty of trouble too!

Some googling tells me you're 100% correct. Learn something new everyday:)

I'd looked at a lot of them not so long ago and never came across one. Was it the soft gearbox from the Mark IV? A six speed 1.9 manual would be a perfect work horse for the m'way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,088 ✭✭✭sean1141

ya id say they were rare enough. never see them advertised. think it was like the mk4 115bhp with the 6speed.. i dont know if it uses the box from the mk4 or not but i dont thnk they were that soft. there is lots of guys running fairly powerfull mk4 based cars with them and i have not heard of many problems
