hi all i test drove one of these today and just want o know from anyone with one does the turbo give a good kick at any stage that should make you feel a bit of a pull or should it gradually pull you up to speed without the kick? its a 01 and immaculate with small milage on it and loads of spec too. my old passat tdi would stick you to the seat when it hit a certain point on the rev meter but the rover didnt do this. havin said that i really like the motor but just wonderin about this.

Should get a decent kick off it before 2000rpm, it power delivery is not seamless, should be similar to the Passat really. Now a CDT is 116bhp so you have to keep that in mind but you should be noticing the turbo kick in.

If the car doesn't pull like it should I'd suspect the MAF sensor. MAF sensor is an easy fix but they aren't looney cheap.

it pulls grand just seems a bit gradual more so than a kick. power never faded when going up hill it just seemed to take it in its stride but i didnt notice a a kick like the passat.

Did it seem ok below 2000rpm?

With my old one, if you kicked down the throttle (It was an auto) you could feel a surge come in at about 1500rpm. Mine was remapped though to 155Bhp.

RJ's on the money though, a lot of times a MAF can be at fault. You can clean them sometimes, but you need to use a very specific cleaning fluid. If you want to give it a go, let me know and I'll root out the name of the stuff for you.

Fantastic car, I miss mine. If it's the MAF, you're normally talking about 300 ish to replace the Bosch one in there like for like. You can put in a cheaper Pierburg sensor, but it causes some issues, and you would have to buy a third party box called the Synergy2 to sort it. Best go for the Bosch.

Remapping, and cleaning the MAF works quite well though, the engine has great tuning potential.

If you do buy it, there's a number of things to look out for. Check the belts running on the left hand side of the engine when the engine's off for any cracking. They're not expensive, but a little awkward to replace. With the engine running, switch the air conditioning on and off. If it's on and you hear a rattling from the engine, the crankshaft pulley's on the way out. A new crankshaft pulley's about 120 euro, and a good 90 minutes labour to fit it.

That's about all that goes wrong. Very reliable car, and as they've done the majority of their depreciating now, you can nearly sell them for as much as you buy them for after a year or so.
