Please help, while deleting unused programmes on my laptop, I seem to have deleted the driver for sound.

Its a dell inspiron 1501 and I am a bit of a luddite so would really appreciate simple instructions to get sound going again.

I have tried going into control panel and installing new hardware but seem to have gotten lost. is there a simple way to get a free download?

What operating system are you using?

If it's XP you can press Start, right click on My Computer and pick Manage.
Then go to Device Manager, go to Sound, video x etc section and update the drivers in each of the parts in there.

If it's Vista or Win7 try get into the device manager and do the same, not sure how you access in those, may be the same way.

Make sure you're connected to the internet btw!

Thanks Keith. System is windows XP and theproblem seems to be with the "IDT high definition audio CODEC. I get a message saying the device cannot start. Code 10. I have gone into device manager and tried to install using harware wizard but no success.
