Ok, I know we are in the midst of the recession and TBH I try to purchase locally to support the local business, but a recent experience has left a bitter taste.

I was looking for a Air and Pollen filter for my Accord and I priced on eBay from a Honda Dealer (Two Mills Honda). From there a Air Filter Element is £19.00 and £2 shipping so circa €24-25 all in.

Priced it at a Irish Honda dealer - €37.51 + VAT @ 21.5% or €45.54 for the same part!!! Don't even ask about the Pollen Filter!

Both suppliers are Honda dealers - why, oh why are we so much more expensive? It's just cost the the the local dealer the business as I'm not going to take a 45% greater hit to support local businesses.

Why are you going to a dealer for OEM parts, dealers sell Original parts, OEM ones can be bought in any decent motor factors. Genuine <> OEM <> Spurious.

Ireland pop about 5million, how many of those are Honda drivers looking for filters?
UK pop about 60million, how many of those are Honda drivers looking for filters? I say at lot more.

It doesn't explain all the difference but economies of scale with access to a larger market on your doorstep, greater competition (more dealers), closer to parts distribution centres, wages, taxes, cost of business, etc all add up.

Ok, I assumed Geniune is the same as OEM?? Obviously not.

Anyway, for the use of genuine normally the cost is not that much different to say "not Genuine maybe" a couple of euro more. However, in this case it was nearly 45% more. That's too much.

As stated, I try to support local businesses, I even expect a small margin in prices, but I don't expect such large differences regardless of market size (all Honda Accords from 03->08 have the same filter)

And if it's like Toyota it's most likely shared across 4 or 5 models in the range also, probably the same used in Jazz, Civic, CRV etc. Did you try pricing in another Honda dealer, others may be more reasonable.

OEM = Original Equipment Manufacture, therefore is Geniune parts. Most people make the mistake of Spurious parts are cheap crap, and in some cases this is true, but OEM manufactures do supply the after market.

In fairness some dealers are cheaper than after market suppliers.
