Issue with Job Seekers payment

After completing my Leaving Cert and although receiving enough points for my College course but not being awarded it. I set about finding work but to no avail, I have been left with no choice but to go on Job seekers allowance.

I filled in my forms some week ago and received word this morning that I had qualified.... for 38 Euro a week.

Sure I am living at home with my parents but my father is on disability and only works 2 and a half days a week with FAS, and my mother only works 2 hours a day caring for elderly people. How can 38 Euro a week be acceptable ? do I have grounds for complaint or is 38 euro a week an acceptable amount? Keeping in mind I am 19 and have no dependent brothers or sisters in the house.

I have searched the net but have found very little in relation to the sum of 38 Euro being awarded to anyone else.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The maximum payment for jobseekers allowance for your age is €100 p.w. If you are under 25 your parents means are assessed for your payment. You would have got a letter explaining how your means decision was made. You have 21 days to appeal a means decision if you are not happy with it.

Sometimes these form letters are a bit confusing and instead of stating the amount you will get, they state the amount of means which have been assessed against you, in your case due to living with your parents. If they have assessed your means as Euro 38.00, that would be deducted from your max JA payment of Euro 100, leaving you with Euro 62.00.

I'd say €38 is right as its €29 for a dependent child so it wouldn't be much more than that for a 17 yr old.

You have to be over 18 to apply for Jobseekers Allowance and the OP is 19 years old.

Yeah but his parents would've reeived 29 for him at 17yrs old so now at 19yrs 38 would probably be seen as acceptable given his circumstances havent changed i.e. living at home not working

I have my own question about the jobseekers allowance. I applied for jobseekers in may, got on the supplementary Jobseekers of 100 ew from mid june until i got a job in mid august. I have just got a letter of my total weekly means, which is 2euro! does this mean 2 euro will be taken off my weekly payment? i turned 22 in august so does this mean i will get back dated from may until august and my payment willl get pushed up because im 22?

or do i get any money because i got a job in august?

Thanks for any help on this

it doest matter how much his parents previously recieved for him. its based on current means so if they had no income other than social welfare(not taken into account on means test) then he would be entitled to the full amount based on his age

it will explain how much your entitled to based on your age how much your means where assesed as and how much your total payment will be. you will be paid everything from may untill august minus any money already paid by the CWO. you get paid at the rate for a 21 year old up untill you turned 22 regardless of when you actually received the money. i.e. if you where entitled to 100 as a 21 year old and 110 as a 22 year old and turned 22 a week before you got the job then you will be paid as a 21 year old for the majority of your time and only recieve 1 week at the higher rate. not the entire amount ! also you might want to look into whether or not your actually recieve an increase im pretty sure it doest change on a year to year basis and is more a case of having an age bracket. i.e. 18 and 19 year olds get 100. 21,22 and 23 get 140 24 gets 160 and then 15 is full rate or something along those lines
