I have an 02 1.6 octavia and i want to change to a diesel to cut running costs, so want to buy something for about 3k along with my own car so probably about 4-5k budget, want good mileage and something nice and comfortable on the motorway, thinking along the lines of a 110bhp golf or passat, what are your opinions and how do the bmw 320d, mondeo, focus, mazda 6 honda accord compare mileage and reliability wise

Or what else would you recommend

unless you do over 20/30k miles a year you really wont see it ,the increased cost of servicing + probably paying higher tax for a 1.9/2.0 (pre 2007) you wont see much of a saving with diesel

I'm going to be doing up near 700-1000km per week so should be definately worth changing, and sorry forgot the avensis in my list, which should give best mileage and be reliable to run

Golf or the Avensis would be my choice but wait for the Octavia crew to come along! What about this maybe?

    the increased cost of servicing

I've never owned a diesel so I'm interested in expanding my knowledge but what are the extra costs in servicing?

having never owned a petrol car I cant compare for myself , but brought up through conversation petrol cars seem to be on average 40-60 euro cheaper to service (main dealer) , now i cant really see where it comes from except perhaps for different specs of oil, filters and different intervals for some components.

in this case it would make no real odds as the OP does a decent mileage , but for one of the many people that start threads here on an almost daily basis wanting a diesel car to do 4k miles a year because its the new fascination, it would make a difference

Stay away from Mazda 6 diesels they are a disaster petrol Mazda 6's are fine. Diesel cars need to have the oil changed more often. They have heavier engines which means more wear in front tyres steering joints etc higher tax with bigger engine. I had 2 diesel cars and went back to petrol again 30k km/year.

At th moment i'm getting less than 35mpg out of my octavia so its costing me a nice bit to keep her going, it has near 150000 miles on it aswell so was thinking of changing and now due to a new job i'll be clocking up a fair bit of miles every week so what sort of mileage should i expect from an 02-05 golf passat or avensis? Or other cars you think i should check out, i'd be fairly suspicious of the low mileage on that golf although its a lovely looking car, one lady owner, a louth car for sale in limerick and i thought all the gt tdi's came in from england? Although i could be wrong, bit over my budget anyway

Servicing wise there's not much in it, diesel filter every 2nd service, oil changes are slightly more frequent. Much of a muchness really. I'd say there's nothing in it really. 2mpg better mpg over 5000 miles would cover it easy anyway.

OP, VW stuff is poor value, have a peak at Seats, Skoda, Peugeot 406s, Citroen C5s, Rover 75, Mondeos etc.

    I can't see an 02 1.6 Octavia with 150k getting €2000 unless there's a full 2 year test on it and it's minty.

Exactly - dont know where this myth of diesels costing more to service comes from - sure you need good oil, but most petrols need good oil too these days.

A diesel will do 45mpg easily combined - even if you factor in the 1000 for a clutch and flywheel (which you might not need) you are up over the lifetime of the car.

i went from a 1.4 seat leon to a 1.9 tdi vw bora. service costs work out the same (service them myself) both had factory service set at 10,000 miles, timing belts were due at the same time and cost the same. after 10k miles the diesel had the differance in tax well paid for.

op i would recomend a bora 130bhp if you can afford a nice tidy one that has been well minded. the 6speed gearbox is ideal for motorway miles and cruise control and acenter armrest can be fitted (if not factory fitted) for small money and will make long motorway drives very comfortable

What mpg or how many miles are people here getting out of 02-05 tdi golfs, passats avensis or other diesels, or if anybody has a petrol car that age getting good mileage?

That's what I've always thought but you hear the opposite quite a bit

Going back ten to fifteen years ago I remember folks always blowing on about it, back then of course a diesel car cost more to buy and the service interval was much (ish) shorter, however petrols as well as having spark plugs had points and all that sort of stuff.

The folks that mention it now are going off old beliefs I'd say. Since the mid 90s I reckon there has been not much in it really.

What are your opinions of the 1.4 d4d corrolla's, my friend has 1 a short while now and it gets serious mileage per tank, are they as relieble as most other toyota's or would i be better of with a 2ltr avensis as they are similar money
