New HD not recognised after installing Windows Vista

    Hi,
I just bought a new 320GB Sata HD for my Dell Inspiron 1525 as the old HD is damaged and no longer booting. Anyway I installed Windows Vista from the discs that came with the laptop and had no problems. When I was in Windows one of the first things that I did was adjust the admin. settings which required a restart. I restarted the computer and was then told that there is no HD detected. It's not even showing up in the BIOS. I have tried switching between ATA and AHCI settings but that makes no difference. The strange thing is that when I put the old damaged HD in it still shows up in the BIOS. Is this a fault with the new HD I bought? Why did it work perfectly initially? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

does the new hdd show up in your bios on boot up?

if not... something is fishy., no reason it should not.

also, you would want to rid of vista and put on a decent o/s.

    just a tip.

edit, seems its not showing up in the bios? strange.. if its brand new i would ask for another., have you tried in another system?

More likely- if you've just installed it- its not connected to the SATA connector properly, and if you reconnect it and perhaps tape it into place, this might solve the issue.

Well I've tried putting it in and out several times and it still doesn't show up in the BIOS. The strange thing is that when I put in the old damaged HD that shows up in the BIOS.
Is it possible that when I installed Windows on the new HD via the DELL reinstallation DVD that my BIOS was somehow replaced by an older version that for some reason doesn't recognise the new HD? I know that I had updated the BIOS in the last year or so so it was running a newer version the first time I put in the HD. Might this explain why it's not being recognised now?

try it in a different system.

I bought an enclosure and formatted the HD on a different system. Now it is working perfectly on my laptop. The next step is trying to recover all the data on the old faulty hard drive. Thanks for the help everybody.
