UPC HD BOX Start up issue

When I switch on my HD box it starts ok with a tv picture and sound displayed on the tv. A few seconds late it turns itself off and goes to load and a then it takes about a minute for the picture to reappear. Is this normal on a HD box or is it faulty. The wait drives me mad having been used to a speedy Sky box !
