    38 so far this year. 11 Cross country, 7 road, 18 track outdoors, 2 track indoors (doubled up on Track / Indoor twice - ran 3 in a day once). Race distances 400m, 800m, 1500m, mile, 2mile, 2.5mile, 3mile, 4mile, 3k, 5k, 6k, 7k, 10k, 12k, half-marathon. Shortest race time 60.5 seconds, longest 81minutes 10 seconds

    Anybody done more?

I'm planning 8 more before year end.

17 So far with roughly 5 in mind for the rest of the year

    30th Jan – 5m (Road) - 27.41
    13th Feb - 10k (Road) - 35.02 *PB*
    5th Mar - 12k (XC) - 48.31
    26th Mar- 8k (XC) - 30.05
    9th Apr- 4 Mile (Road)- 21.48 *PB*
    17th Apr - 2 mile (Road) - 10.33 *PB*
    20th Apr- 5000m (Track) - 16.53
    1st May- 10,000m (Track) - 35.35
22nd May Half Marathon 1.29.49 *Pacer*
    12th June -3000m S/C (Track)-11.16
    22nd June - 1500m (Track)- 4.24.84
    2nd July - 1500m (Track)- 4.39
    10th July - 1500m (Track)- 4.21.51
    17th July - 3000 S/C (Track)- 10.46.23 *PB*
    21st July - 3000m (Track) - 9.50
    30th July - 3000m (Track) - 9.35.25
    25th Sept - 5k (Road) - 16.44

I think this has the bones of a good thread as to see how many people race just for PBs, under race/ over race etc. For me when I am racing most of the time I try to have roughly 2 weeks between races as to prevent my training being compromised other people seem to race themselves into shape. I also find at some of the distances it takes me a few races to get the proper sharpness to make a PB attempt (looking at this year my 1500/3000m are good examples. What are peoples approaches to this?

    1 mile race, 4 x 5k, 3 x 5 mile, 2 x 10k, 1 x 10 mile, and 1 x half marathon so far.
    PB..............3 PBs....2 PBs.......2 PBs......PB................PB
Still to come, another 10k, marathon, possibly a 5k (Jingle Bells), and some crosscountry (I hope)

This year I've tried not to race more than once or twice a month, so I train properly in between and make each race more of an event.
Next year I'm planning to keep the distances under 10k, and maybe race more.

I have done too many races than would be recommended, but I have also still managed to knock 30 seconds off my 5k, 10 seconds off my 10k, a minute off my half time and win a few prizes this year.

    27 races, 11 M40 PB's, Raced 160k in 9hrs58, shortest 1500, longest HM.
Probably a little on the high side, will race about 5 more and will reduce to <25 next year.

    1 x 5k
    4 x 10k
    2 x 10 Mile
    1 x 13.1 (Road)
    2 x 13.1 (IMRA Trail)
    3 x ultra (50-55k)
    =13 races (5 road-based PBs).
Also involved in three races (pacing sub 90 minute half).
One marathon and hopefully some XC races to wrap-up the year.

5 this year and very happy with that (1x10k, 4xtriathlon), it might become 6 depending on when this year's fields of athenry is on :)

I focus my rear around Master's championships. Other races are mainly for preparation. Some races take the place of weekend session or tempo run.
My PB days are long behind me (did get my Master's mile PB this summer though).

Think I've only done 6 this year, 7 if you count pacing the Limerick half. 3 were a write off that should never have been run mind.

Raheny, GIR, Leeds half marathon are best forgotten and aren't counted and long forgotten.

Dunshauglin, Dun Laoghaire(also forgotten) and the national half marathon.

Was registered for two more but didn't manage to do them. Woeful year race wise for me - missed two marathons and an ultra as well actually and it looks like I could go the whole of 2011 without running a marathon.

Edit: I forgot some, St. James Hospital 6.5k and Cork relay.

Might do another 10k and the Waterford half before the year is out. We shall see.

    15 races, 6 PBs, one win :D

    1mile, 3k, 5k x6, 5mile, 10k x2, 8 mile,10 mile x2, HM.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,928 ✭✭✭✭rainbow kirby

    2 5k's, 5 mile, 10k (which I DNF'd and I'd rather pretend didn't exist), HM, marathon.

Only 2 PBs here (HM in Waterford and marathon in Barcelona), because 2011 may as well be a complete and utter write-off for me training (and racing)-wise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,900 ✭✭✭Seres

I always plan for one a month but only got 6 in this yr so far . Family commitments is my limiting factor for the races ( thats actual the truth ecoli , no excuses !) .It doesnt affect my training cause it easy enough squeeze 1.5hrs (max) out daily but a couple of hrs for the races can be a juggling act , C'est la vie .

    10mi & 4*10k & HM : 3 pbs , if you count my first HM as one !!!

1 race for the year :(....

a few XC races early on but didnt race them, so a sum total of 5.

But its been a good year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,623 ✭✭✭dna_leri

8 races this year, 2 or 3 to go, so almost an average of 1 a month.
Any more and I don't have enough recovery and training time between races.

    1x15K, 4x10K, 1x8K, 3x5K
    6 PBs so far.

From my experience you will be hitting your peak around your 8th competition of a summer season. Depends on your event of course and the athlete. I will even structure a race schedule with that in mind.

how long would you summer season last ? would you space the races evenly apart ? what are your race peak indicators ?

April to August. They'll be spaced if possible. Start late April and 2 comps up to end of May, 4 from June to early July, 1 mid July and then comp no 8 in late July if that is the peak competition. Likely to be some competitions after that in August. The 4 in June to July will tell you if it'll be happening or not while training sessions as opposed to races in the May period will be a good indicator for me.

    8 X 5K
    1 X 8K
    3 X 10K
    1 X 10 mile
    3 X 13.1 mile
    1 X 26.2 mile

Plan 1 marathon (DCM) and 1 half marathon (waterford) before the end of the year. Maybe a couple of shorter ones as well.

Was racing a lot earlier in the year but have reduced the number over the summer, all but 4 were before the middle of June.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,441 ✭✭✭Slogger Jogger

First few months of the year were a write off with injury. Since then its been not too bad.

16 IMRA races (15 regular races & Wicklow way Relay - not listed in imra database unfortunately)
Pacer for Strawberry half marathon 1:45
Ran with pacer at 3 hr marathon pace in Athlone 3/4 marathon, 2:22 ish chip time.

    DCM &
    IMRA Powerscourt Ridge to come

    & possible a 5 or 10k along the way.

June - july races : is that nearly one a week ? seems like alot , do you get most of your important training done then in may ? how does the winter season work for you ?

Bear in mind, these are short sprint races. However, the mental and emotional effect can be as draining as a 5k for example.,Also, for some athletes of a certain standard there will be international travel to races, so while only sprints, 6 weeks of solid racing would drain you.

June-July would be 4 in 6 weeks, but its dependent on finding the races. In this phase of racing they will be just racing and resting mainly. All the hard stuff is done by mid May maybe. Winter would see indoor races maybe if its a priority and if not just solid training.

I find after 12 competitions you may be just going through the motions. Each race would have a purpose and different frame of mind. Race 1 season opener, happy its not a disaster. Race 2 work on any specific issues from race 1. Race 3, look to be nailing your race strategy, race 4-6, definetly running consistently fast and close to PB or PB, race 7 needs to be a confidence booster and race 8 is the big one.

    2 X 5K
    4 X 10K 1 PB
    3 X 10 Miles 2 PB
    2 X Half Marathons
    1 X Full Marathon PB

DCM and Eddie Murphy to round off the year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,496 ✭✭✭Oisin11178

    2x half marathon
    16x marathon
    1x 50k
    1x 39.3 miles
    1x 100k
    1x 24 hours (102 miles)
I think i have 4 marathons and a double marathon planned before the end of the year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭nerraw1111

18 races so far, didn't think it was that many.

    11 IMRA races
    2 WAR races
    2 Hellfire duathlons
    Gaelforce
    Warrior's Run
    Le Cheile 5km race.

Plan to run a few 5km/10km races before the year is out to set some pbs.

  • Subscribers Posts: 19,425 ✭✭✭✭Oryx

1 x Toughguy (assault course thing)
    2 x Sprint tri
    1 x Oly tri
    2 x HIM
2 x duathlon (ballbuster 8/24/8m, one down one to go)
    1 x 10k
    1 x Half marathon
    1 x 'the craic'

Counts as 11, I thought I'd done more so probably forgetting one or two. I deliberately kept the race count low this year to focus on the HIM target.

Cant remember dates off hand but seperating the decathlon into the various events I did then these are the following races/ competitions I have so far competed in in 2011, with a lot more to come over the coming 3 months.

    1) - 200m - 28.20 PB - AV Shield Meet 10
    2) - 800m - 2:44.70 - AV Shield Meet 10
    3) - Long Jump - 4.17m - AV Shield Meet 10
    4) - 100m - 15.53 (injured) - AV Shield Meet 11
    5) - Javelin - 13.21m - AV Shield Meet 11
    6) - Discus - 14.5m Approx - AV Shield Meet 11
    7) - 400m - 63.90 PB - End of Season Meet 2
    8) - 800m - 2:34.90 PB - End of Season Meet 3
    9) - 100m - 13.80 - End of Season Meet 3
    10) - Triple Jump - 8.93m PB - End of Season Meet 3
    11) - Shot - 5.67m - End of Season Meet 3
    12) - 10km - 45:24 PB - Flemmington 10k
    13) - 100m - 13.40 PB - Decathlon
    14) - Long Jump - 4.24m - Decathlon
    15) - Shot - 4.89m - Decathlon
    16) - High Jump - 1.15m - Decathlon
    17) - 400m - 61.80 PB - Decathlon
    18) - Discus - 13.5m approx - Decathlon

Am only counting performances in sprints, 10k and horizontal jumps as PBs. Everything else my results are too bad to be considered PBs.
