Pals Passat 1.6TSI (2007) is running rough, looks like a coil failure. Is this a big job or simply a bolt off/bolt on once accessed?

Also should the car not be driven, a mechanic told her it was OK to drive for a couple of days but that just sounds wrong to me.

Have had issues with coils in the 1.6FSi Passat before, but I've never changed them myself so don't know if it's a simple job like they were on the 1.8T.

Driving for a short while won't do too much damage, but you wouldn't want to leave it too long.

Full set of coils (and I'd recommend a full set rather than one at a time) should be around €200 - €250 fitted by an independant. Might be worth a look to see if it is a DIY job as the coils should only be around €40 each from a motor factors.

Cheers, would like to do this if at all possible. Complicated by the engine fault light on the dash that would need to be cleared. VW are quoting around €300 plus which seems nuts.

Its fairly simple to change and they aren't that expensive to buy.

As for running with a misfire..on such a modern car, I wouldn't. People think thats all thats happenign is the spark plug isn't fireing but a dead piston getting pushed up and down the bore will start to cause scoring on the cylinder wall and unburt fuel in the cylinder also 'washes' the cylinder walls leading to the pistons rings not sealing as well as they should.

Unburt fuel in the exhaust systems also very quickly starts to damage the lamda sensors and cat

That's what I thought NIssan Doctor, cheers, I'll warn her against driving, is there a trick to identifying which coil has failed?

Without diagnostic equipment the basic way to check is start the engine and disconnect each coil pack in turn, the functioning ones will make it run worse again when disconnected and there will be no change when you disconnect the failed one.

From experience with the 1.8T engine, if one's going/gone, then the others aren't too far behind. I replaced 2 seperatley then a 3rd went and I ended up getting all 4 replaced.

If you are just replacing one, it might be an idea to buy a spare for when the next one goes. You might be lucky.......

Did you try to give the dealer a ring??

Few years ago my Golf MK4 had a coil issue too and they replace it for me for free even though it was out of the warranty period.

    No harm trying.
