Problem installing a thermostat on a Glow Worm Micron boiler.

Some years back my Mom had a Micron boiler installed in her Dublin house. At the time she decided to save money by not having a thermostat installed.

Obviously, with the rises in fuel prices, this turns out not to have been a good saving. :(

The boiler was installed in an upstairs bedroom and there is no wiring for a themostat to this room. I bought her a Horstmann HRFS1 Room Thermostat. This is a wireless thermostat and I expected that this would allow her the benefit of temperature controls rather than turning manually on and off as she got too hot or too cold.

I am now informed that she did not have the bit that the thermostat is supposed to be connect TO. (whether cable or wireless)

Will it be possible to have this component added to an existing installation or is an entirely new boiler going to be required?

    Thanks for any assistance.:D

Depending on the output of the boiler, you'll have to connect the reciever part

for the wireless stat to either the switched live on the boiler or just the live only.

You can see what the boilers output is by

1/ Lowering the grey control lid, there should be a sticker saying

    30ff
    40ff
    50ff

These models have no permanent live and the reciever should be wired directly

into the three block connector at the front.

    60ff
    70ff
    80ff
Have a permanent live and the reciever should be wired into the switched live on the seven block connector.

Thers also a 100 and a 120 model, they have a permanent live connetion

But youll have to pull forward a panel/box part to access the thermosta box.

The electrical connections are in there. there is a diagram on the inside of panel/box on the 100/120 but not on the other models.

Installation books are available from http://www.glow-worm.co.uk

Nowadays this sort of work can only be done by an rgi !!!

best of luck and dont forget to turn off the boilers power supply before any work.

circuit boards do NOT like amateur welding:D

    Hope that helps:)

    Wing52,

Thanks for that it has been most helpful! The boiler in question is a 50ff.

The warning about not doing amateur soldering is fully taken to heart. As soon as it says Gas I want to leave it to someone who knows the ins and outs better than myself!

I gather that the rules on this forum do not allow for people to advertise services in this kind of matter. Is there some sort of tradesmen recommendation site for the south dublin area?

Or shoudl I just check for authorised dealers of GlowWorm to get the works completed?

Thanks again for all assistance. :)

That boiler type is fairly common.

I.E. wall hung non condensing open vent (mostly!)

Go and look up the rgi register for approved personnel near you.

Although it's really an electrical issue.
