I'd like to do same with some Fallow Antler for a handle.

That Ray Meares one is 4" blade, but no sheath.

You would not need rivets if you glued the handle with araldite or similar.

Davy's knives although beautiful are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range

Have a root around this guy's site. He makes his own but I think he might also supply some materials and he has a links page which might point you in the right direction.

thanks for the links and the help everyone

i was thinking of a general purpose hunting knife , with a full tang and a three and a half or four inch blade.I dont understand the different types of steels so im pretty lost on which type to choose . I was also thinking of maybe putting brass end cap and brass guard but i dont know if that might taking on more than i can handle for my first knife I might be better off trying to keep it simple . Im going to go for brass corby rivets to hold it together with a brass lanyard. As for woods i have been looking at afew different types and havent made my mind up yet i'll just have to see what woods i can source .

Sorry if that post is all over the place i find it hard to discribe it in writing .Any help sourcing materials or tips will be greaty apprecated

If you are just starting out and it's your first knife to make then I'd suggest an Enzo trapper kit from Brisa. You can buy the kit for around €70 They are foolproof kits with very good quality steel. Denis the owner is a decent guy to deal with to boot. They come in a few different varieties. Some basic tools and you will be flying it. You can buy or make a sheath for an extra 30 -50.

DO NOT buy any cheap blank blades from auction sites etc. You get what you pay for and in the end and after all your hard work you will be very dissapointed with the resulting knife.

Let me know how you get on

If you ever want to upgrade let me know ;)

I'd love a blank blade ~6-9" long and broad so it is strong.
I have a lovely bit of fallow antler that would be ideal for a handle.

    My Budget?
Under €100 for Just the Blade and no more than €150 for rivets or what ever is required.
I like a knife with a hilt as I often saw guys in the meat factory cut them selves with their own knives that got slippery like a bar of soap.

A lot of the Swedish blades have no guard

Looking at a 25cm bowie blade for £45 which seems very reasonable. Prefer a blade that can be inserted into antler though
