Can you tax a car with no NCT?

    Hi all,
I just took a calculated punt on a car which failed the NCT for two minor issues. I bought the car at the right price and have seen the fail advisory from the NCT test. I'm happy to remedy the problems and get it retested.

My query relates to road tax. The car was a project for the previous owner and has been off the road since 2008, and has not been taxed since then.

I'm obviously worried about leaving it untaxed while I get the car ready for an NCT retest, so I'm wondering if anybody knows the facts about taxing cars. motortax.ie has no information in its FAQ regarding the NCT and replies to similar queries here and on other motoring forums are contradictory, so I'm after clarity!

Ideally, I'd like to tax the vehicle the minute I get the new VLC but this will be before the NCT cert is available. Is this possible?

    Many thanks.

    Many thanks

you can tax the car online without showing nct or insurance.

But You are required by law to have valid tax and NCT disks displayed on your car.

    Of course it is.
No one at motor tax office is going to ask you about NCT.
You don't need to provide any evidence of NCT>

NCT only if car is being driven.
If it's parked in public place, but not driven - then Tax and Insurance is enough.
