JVC vs Sony car stereo connector

your jvc radio is probably connected to your iso block by an adapter. The sony radio *should* have an iso adapter included

Both Sony and Jvc come with a short wiring loom and each have an ISO socket at one end. There should be no problem in swapping the stereos around.

Do it either way - Sony products don't play burned CD's!

The problem is that the Sony has a slightly different connector to the JVC but it's not the old school socket.
You can see the connector that came with the wire loom for the JVC and the connector in the back of the Sony.

So what I need is an adapter from the Sony to the JVC, and since I don't know the name for the Sony connection I can't google it.

I've a cheapish Sony and it plays pretty much everything, from any medium! Far superior to the JVC unit I put in her car for a similar price.

Biko, pretty sure you need an ISO to JVC adapter rather than a Sony -to-JVC adapter, and it should have come in the box. Your existing wiring (in the car) ends in one big block right? The JVC should have come with an adapter that goes between that bloc and the back of the JVC?

Sometimes if you pull out a factory unit you also need to get a "Manufacturer X" to ISO adapter, but seeing as you already had an aftermarket unit I reckon you already have ISO at the end of the car wiring as it is?

Odd that! I've had two cars with Sony disc loaders and also a Sony home sound system and none of them will play burned CD's!

Yes, I know what you mean on the home systems - I have a Sony system that's probably 20years old that plays burned (but not MP3 obviously) CDs fine. But at some later stage they must have made a decision not to read burned CDs.

I have a CDX-GT something something head unit and it plays all sorts. Mainly use the USB tho.

I did find that some CD unit will sometimes play CDs burned from some burners but not others. Her (newer) sony small hifi would jump and skip on CDs from a basic CD burner but would play CDs from a dual-layer lightscribe DVD burner fine...

It's not CDRWs you're using, is it? (just in case like, haven't used one of them in years!)

Here's a pic of the connector in the car, as you can see it's not the really old style that would fit in the JVC wiring loom.
It resembles more a ISO but is slightly bigger.

I had two different sony cd players in cars and they played "burned" cds. Are you sure the cds were audio cd format and not just holding music files from the computer? I don't know how to put that properly as i'm not a tech person but i've had the problem where some cds will play and some won't and that was supposedly the reason for it in that case. Wrong format or something

No - it's not that, they play fine in the other two cars on non Sony equipment and I've often made mix CD's for people for party's and that. It's not the end of the world anyhow!

Sorry for the off topic Biko! :o

I too have found sony head units to be hit and miss with burned cd's , they seem to hate all brands of cd-rw's and some brands of cd-r's , it also depends how you burn them.

on topic - biko , what car is it , seems like you need an adapter from your current connector to ISO , some jap cars like subarus have strange connectors like yours and need an adapter to go to ISO first

It's a 93 E36. I think car used to have a BMW quadlock but previous owner wired in a Sony connector to fit the Sony xr-c210 stereo rather than a quadlock to Sony wiring loom.

I have found wiring diagrams on the net so could probably rewire it myself but could also end up frying everything.

yeah thats seeming like the best option , wire in an iso connector so you can put in any stereo

Are you sure the original BMW radio adapter isn't just shoved down behind? I only found mine after owning the car for a year.

    hi!
I have a similar problem - need to replace my Sony CD player with smth else (the stupid thing is permanently stuck in DEMO mode and taking out a fuse to cut power, resetting, etc doesn't help).

I haven't bought a replacement car stereo yet, but before I do, I wanted to make sure the connector I have is the ISO one that will fit most of the units that are sold nowdays.

This is what I have at the moment:

I know! But I bought the car with this piece of artwork, so need to understand now what I have at the moment and the best way to fix it:confused:

Taking this to my friend mechanic tomorrow to see what he says.

Good question. Had a look and it's not so in my car. Looks like previous owner rewired it instead.
Guess I'll have to have a audio guy look at it, they should have all sorts of adapters.

In the end I went to Incartechnology in Glenrock Bus Prk.
They installed and re-wired (adapters not available) the stereo for 20E, well worth it.
