Do you absolutely have to be unemployed for ages to apply for these positions, or could you leave a job to start one of them, and go on the dole while doing it?

I am a MSc graduate, finding it extremely hard to get a job related to my chosen career, so am working as a shop assistant at the moment. I have seem a couple of jobs that would be perfect experience advertised on the WWP, but of course you need to unemployed for them, which is very frustrating. Is there any way around this?
