Ubuntu, lvm and mdadm

    Hi

Not sure if this is the right forum but it’s pretty much about Ubuntu, LVM and mdadm.

I bought the HP Microserver and have set up Ubuntu 11.04 Server on the 250GB drive that comes with it. With zero background of Linux, I have also installed Webmin so I can easily manage this setup primarily as a file storage and media server later on.

The 250GB has been partitioned accordingly and for the moment left with a 220GB for shared storage (ext4) . I did this using LVM via Webmin. Now I have also added 2 new 2TB hard drives and created a RAID1 on a full partition from both drives.

This is where now I’m undecided – either to add this RAID1 to existing volume group or create another volume group. My intention is to maintain flexibility and also have some redundancy setup in place.

Are there any disadvantages to put an existing LVM volume together with a RAID1 volume? Is this ideal at all?

Also per my understanding, LVM allows to ‘pool various volumes into one big storage’ and these include different RAID setups. Is this true?

Also what would be the ideal or appropriate power settings for hard drives running RAID?

These questions might be fairly basic but sorry I’m a total noob when it comes to Linux! :D

Many thanks in advance for all comments, suggestions and advices!

    Best regards,
    M.

I wouldn't bother my bottom with a volume group. I don't rate LVM's that much at all tbh. Most filesystems can be grown anyway or you can migrate to a different RAID structure (e.g. RAID 5) if you add in a new drive with a bit of flutin' around (I'm assuming you're using the linux kernel RAID and not some hardware RAID?)

I would definitely NOT do this. It defeats the purpose of the RAID array IMO.

This is true, but it also means that if your 250G drive fails and it's all part of the same filesystem, you may lose some data, despite having a raid array.

    I don't understand this.

    Thanks Khannie. That's some assurance.

My last question was about setting up the storage drives for standby mode, etc. Am just thinking whats the ideal way to ensure maximise the life of the hard drives n lower power usage.
