Here's a silly question: the clear plastic cover for my driver's licence is in tatters. Any idea where I'd go about getting another one? Cheers.

I got a faux-leather one in a €2 shop - it is black (or green) and says Irish Driving Licence on it (there's also similar ones for passports) - you open out your drivers licence and put it in this cover. When you open up the cover, the licence is opened - you can see the three front pages all at once.

It's handy enough, as it's hard to keep these paper licences in perfect condition for 10 years - we really need credit card sized licences.

Interesting, but wouldn't it be a bit bulky in an ass-cheek pocket?

Oh, don't get me started on that one. :)

No it's not bulky at all - it isn't a hard cover or anything, it's just a soft cover (very cheaply built euro-shop cover!), but it does the job well enough! I'm sure you can get more sturdier ones somewhere!

Free if you call into any tax office.

Second this, I have one too although it's falling apart after two years of use. Although I rather the holder fall apart than the licence, them plastic sleeves are useless. They fall apart in your pocket and then your licence starts getting dog ears then ripped.

I've had several replacement licences due to this, they just get into too much of a state because i always have them on me and they get messed up in my pocket. anywhere else and i'd lose it

Any chance they will ever bring in the credit card type driving license that fits easily into your wallet. I had one in Oz and it far better than our ones here....

Yeah they have the credit card size ones in the UK and the North, way better job. I've had my license a year and its still pristine but that's because I never take it out of my car!

How about a bit of Blue Peter and do what I did? - Made one out of a plastic milk carton and duct tape using my Swiss Army knife... slim enough for pocket but also tough...

(Coincidentally I am wearing my 'What would Macgyver do?' T-shirt today...)

There's supposed to be an EU directive that all drivers licences and categories are standardised by IIRC 2014, so we'll have our CC licences by 3014

The licence is plastic covered, coffee shouldn't damage a new one. It doesn't mater you'll need to pay for a new one if it's damaged.

AFAIK they'll change it free if you move house, there's no law saying you can't move home shortly after;)

I say they will just phase out the old ones, meaning you'll have to pay for the CC style one when you renew your licence. They can't afford to just hand out CC style licences and I don't really have a problem with the paper one it acts as my wallet :D

Those licences actually come half laminated (only on one side)...

Why not get it laminated on both sides. Then it should be quite robust.

I am currently looking for one of these, I went into the city about a month ago and couldn't find one in any of the €2 shops. Anyone know where I can find one of these in Dublin now?

I got mine about a year ago, I think, in the €2 shop beside the Abbey Street Luas stop! There were a bunch of black and green passport and driving licence holders beside each other!

I find the €2 shops fly through stock, but it usually comes back in again every few months. Keep dropping in to any handy ones and they'll eventually have some in stock.

I'm looking for some of those covers as well so if anyone knows which shop definitely stocks them I'll go there to get them. Thanks

Just go to any Motor Tax Office (MTO) in the country. They'll give you one for free (or even a small bundle of them, if you want).

Also most MTOs have an information desk, at which there's no queuing. Just go to that desk and ask for one. They'll give it to you there and then.

    Regards,
    John.
