Programmable thermostat and hot water question re a gas boiler.

    Hi,

I have just moved into a new apt which has an outdoor gas boiler (in a room off the balcony) and a fancy looking honeywell programmable thermostat in my hall. I understand how the thermostat works to heat the radiators but am very confused about my hot water.

The boiler has 3 settings, off, just hot water and then radiators with hot water. In order for the thermostat to be used then the boiler needs to be switched on at all times which seems to be permanently boiling hot water even if radiators arent being heated. This would surely cost me a fortune? Can someone please explain how this works to me as I am tearing my hair out!

    Thanks

Do you have a hot water cylinder in the apartment?

No I dont. The gas boiler seems to be the only thing I have.

Then as a guess you have a combination boiler, combi boilers only uses gas for hot water when you open a tap, it may also use a small amount if there is a preheat for hot water on the boiler, the hot water should be independent of the heating external controls.

For the roomstat to work properly the boiler would have to be in the radiators and hot water mode as normally the a signal is sent from the boiler first up to the roomstat then back to the boiler, the boiler will not fire to use gas unless the roomstat requires heat or you open a tap. By turning the control on the boiler to hot water only mode you are telling the boiler to ignore what the roomstat is doing but still fire when the tap is opened.
