    Hi all,

Mods move this to a relevant thread if there is any similar to this.

My laptop, Sony Vaio, 4 years old, won't start up. The Microsoft Corporation screen appears with the Load Bar but the laptop won't boot up.

Any body any suggestions on how to sort this myself, money is tight so if I can sort this myself it would be great.

I have tried the F8 button but this does nothing when the computer is in the load phase.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

It may be hanging due to a program trying to start up when windows loads.

Try booting into safe mode. When the machine is first turned on press the f8 key at the top of the keyboard. This will give you the safe mode option. You will need to be quick as the f8 keys needs to be pressed before the machine starts to load windows. So turn on from cold and straight away start hitting the f8 key. You will get a black screen with some options choose the last one safe mode. Safe mode only loads the things windows needs to run on and not all the other crap. The graphics will look messed up because the graphic drivers won't be loaded but this is all normal. If she gets into windows ok then its something on startup thats causing the machine to hang.

You can then go into the task manager and disable certain things from starting when windows loads. If you get this far and are not sure what to do next send me a pm and i can try help with the next steps.

Is it windows vista or xp? If vista did you try startup repair?

Again sorry about jumping the gun!!

    Thanks for the quick replies.

I have tried the F8 button but it doesn't seem to work. I will try it again when I am home from work.

I will also take a picture of the screen and post it up. I'm not sure what model it is. It uses Vista though.

I have seen on line that I can take out my hard drive and install it in a external hard drive adaptor to try clear this problem. Do you's think this would be a good idea?
