    Looking for any dental insight if anyone can help, Im gonna book the dentist appointment, but like a lot of people this days dont have a lot of cash at the moment.

    I recieved a deep enough filling this time last year, upper molar, it always remained a little sensitive but never pained. It has flared up the last couple of weeks, lots of swelling and pressure and dull aching . I now have a line of ulcers on the hard palette coming from the tooth. They are pretty 'angry' and sore. Does this mean infection?

    I have a feeling the dentist is just gonna give me a prescription and tell me to come back to him in a week!

    Thanks for any thoughts

    Sound like an infection in the tooth which has broken through the bone and gum to point our the palate. Its pretty common complaint. You might need a root canal or an extraction depending on if you want to hang onto the tooth. Go to the dentist, get the tests done and find out your options.

    Thanks Fitz, so the infection goes 'up' into the bone and accross to the hard palette?...as painful as it is it's also kinda interesting, weird I know!

    I think I will get an extraction, the tooth is not in my smile line and it would probably only cause more hassle in years to come?

    Thanks

    Sounds a little odd;
    The obvious things would be;

    A dead tooth (possible given the deep filling) usually though you would get a gumboil (sinus) on the lip side of the tooth, it is possible to get a gumboil on the palate side but it would not look like a line of ulcers...

    Gum swelling caused by simple gum inflammation from plaque. A burn on your palate- any hot food drink lately- pizza is the worst offender...

    A viral infection, any contact with someone with shingles?

    It's not a common site for regular ulcers or ulcers of vitB12, folate, iron deficiency....

    Do you smoke heavily?

    How long is the lesion present now?

    Is that tooth tender to bite on or tap??

    OS

    I cannot see any obvious boil on the outside of the tooth.Just general swelling and quite red.

    The ulcers on the hard palette feel hot and raw, but they are not raised. They stop immediatley at the palette divide at the very top of the mouth.

    My gut feeling is the tooth is too sore for the ulcers to be unrelated due to a burn etc.

    Tooth is definitely tender to bite on, havent been chewing on that side.

    I have never smoked.

    Sounds like the tooth alright but obviously let the dentist who sees you decide following x-ray and clinical examination...

    If the tooth is dead- you have 2 options; root canal treatment to keep the tooth or an extraction...

    Let us know what your dentist says tomorrow.

    Good luck,
    OS

    Please, if at all possible keep your teeth. Relacement down the road can be tricky and expensive. Its a slippery slop, and only dirty old tramps go round with no teeth or gaps ;)
