Lapsed motor tax with restoration project

I've bought a 1970 Lambretta as a restoration project, the buff log book was included in the sale but the scooter was last taxed in 1985, my question is: can I declare the Lambretta off the road since then or do I have to pay back motor tax?
P.S. I've put this into the classic car section rather than motorbikes as the good people here might have more experience of this situation, thanks in advance.

theres a section on the renewal form for the Gards to witness your declaration that it wasnt on the road for the period in question. You just pay from the first of the month that it went back on the road.

dont worry bout this being in the wrong section...the mods love scooters...:D

I thought that once ownership changed on a log book that the new owner is not liable for any back tax? At least thats what happened on a few cars I bought that werent taxed

Just tax it from when you put in on the road, you may have to declare it off the road from when you bought it but it's only a formality really.
Don't worry a bit about it!!

And Corky, you crack me up!
