How long does it take for debit card payment to go through

If I payed for an item last Wednesday by debit card how long does it take for the transaction to go through? I just looked an my online internet banking and their is no sign of my account being debited by the amount. I presumed it was instantaneous?

Can vary - sometimes it can go through within days, sometimes it will take longer. Sometimes the merchant will only do transactions in batches
