Was collecting my son from school this afternoon, came back to the car and both my fecking number plates were missing.
Asked a couple of parents if they saw any suspicious cars, one said she saw a bluey grey car with a man and woman park beside mine, man gets out and "had a look" at my car......

Just reported it to the guards and eflow, any thing else I should do apart from waiting for the parking fines, toll bills, accusations of driving away from petrol stations with out paying, speeding fines,

Heading out to get another set, going to make sure they are more secure than double sided tape.....

If It was me I'd report them missing to the Gardai ASAP.

Then I'd head down fill up my car and drive off. You have an alibi so why not. :D

Isn't it a good thing that petrol stations don't have security cameras? :pac:

Make sure you fully document your activities over the next while, you may need to account for your whereabouts.

Did you not see the big smiley face at the end of my post. I was just kidding. I thought that was obvious.

There are three likely reasons for this:
    1. to clone a car to avoid speeding/toll charges, etc.
    2. bank job
    3. scam car sale

either way, be sure to keep track of your movements over the next few weeks/months

The OP already informed the Gardai! It wasn't necessary for you to remind him/her to do so again.

Keep an eye on donedeal and similar for your make, model and colour and see if number plate is visible.

My numberplates were taken off my car in an underground office car park, they were replaced with plates from a stolen car and the stolen car with my plates were used in an attempted robbery. I discovered this when the cops knocked on my door at 3 a.m. the following morning.

What I didn't know was that my original number plates could be popped off very easily because they were only held in place by a clip-on frame which contained the dealer's name. When I bought new plates I made sure they were screwed on with plastic caps over the screw heads to make it as awkward as possible for someone to do the same thing again.

Well em... this will sound odd too

    but

do you wanna post your reg and see if anyone comes across it ?

(i wouldnt be worried at this stage about someone knowing the reg of the car :pac:)

In almost every country in such case you would apply for new registration number, get new plates with new number and forgot about the case.

In Ireland you have to be ready now, that guards will knock to your door in the middle of the night and arrest you ;)

A months or two ago I wrote a post about it, so everyone laughed at me that no one steals number plates in Ireland, and there is absolutely no need for possibility to get new number.

What a complete and utter ridiculous over-reaction!

Can you point out one person ever arrested in such circumstances?

Why do they bother stealing plates when you can just get new ones printed without anyone asking you any questions ?

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators Posts: 41,228 Mod ✭✭✭✭Seth Brundle

In theory, they cannot be traced at all.

    Cheaper to steal them!

A more far fetched reason - If used in a robbery the gardai could possibly check in motor factors if anyone has bought a certain reg and maybe check cctv?

Maybe it fell off while you were driving? Double-sided sticky tape isn't the most ideal way to keep a reg plate on you know...?

I would have thought stealing plates which people then report to Guards, who then put an alert on it would be a more probable way to get caught, no ?

What car do you have, is it a navy toyota ? I walked by a car near me during the heavy rain we had over the weekend and the front plate was falling off, obviously held on only by tape, probably loosened by water ingress. It was hanging on by one side but that was never going to last long. I checked today and it's gone now.

Not a hope of that happening, what are the chances of both falling off at the same time?

It was obvious from the remaining double sided foam / tape that they were ripped off, the guy that installed my new ones (with tape and screws) laughed that there was no way that they fell off with the amount of tape that was originaly used.

Anyway as I already said a couple were seen driving into an empty car park, mine was the only car there at the time, parked beside mine, lad got out and was seen walking around my car, then got back into his car and left immediately.
The witness couldn't give a good description of the car , she admitted she was brutal when it came to makes and models, but was able to give a very good description of them, Not going to say what else she said as it would get me banned or at the very least infracted.

My car is a black VW passat, reg is 03 MH 21**

Going to see if I can upload the pics I took of the amount of tape that held them on. There is no way that they fell off.

Order a different style of plate now, maybe German Spec numbering so that you can easily spot and point out the difference on cctv, eflow, speed cameras etc.... I know the timeline is obvious but just an idea....

And what if he gets done for illegal plates then ??

OP do you have a smart phone ?
If so download "My Tracks" (android program - no sure what apple equivalent is). Anyhow its a program for GPS tracking your runs, cycles etc. Will work in the car too. Just use it everywhere you go for next few weeks and you will be able to prove you were or weren't in particular place

Good thinking, never thought of that, i had the new plates made up and installed within an hour as I didn't want to be driving around with no plates. On the way to the motor factors I had a guy on a motor bike knock on the window to let me know that my plates were gone :p sound lad

If or rather when, the fines etc start coming in I'll be demanding photos as my car has a black debadged grill, so it should make it a bit easier to prove any undeserved fines are not mine.

Going to be a right royal pain in the arse if they go to town with my plates......

Don't think the cops will call the FBI in on this one, German type plates, not German plates.... Lots of them knocking around now, haven't heard of anyone having problems with the law....

I used some to stick mine on and fcuk me you'd have less trouble ripping one that's screwed on off... also saves drilling holes etc

Put a black spot somewhere on the plate, where it can be easily identified in a photo.

Failing that, I imagine a lot of SatNav systems now allow you to record your journeys, so if you got into the habit of doing that every time you jumped in the car, you'd have a complete log of everywhere you went and when if you're ever challenged with it.

smartphone / sat nav logs mean nothing really... nothing to stop the OP giving the sat nav to a mate who is a lorry driver for a living or leaving his phone in someone else's car deliberately to manufacture an excuse...

far fetched but if you're robbing a bank / stealing number plates, you'll go to any lengths to cover your tracks..

In some parts of England this is a very commonplace crime at the moment. Normally, it is just people that want to use your plates to steal petrol. A good
deterrent is those security screws that they sell in Halfords, or a cheaper option in B&Q.

Exactly. The proper tape can actually take paint off, or you'll break the plate in the process. And it's useful for curved panels. I had a plate on a curved front PU, and when the PU got damaged, do you think I could get the plate off ? Like hell ! Ended cutting the bumper with a saw to get it off.

On a related note, screws ? What, screwdrivers got rare all of a sudden ?? If they want your plate, they'll have it, end of.
