Is there a limit on car engine size for Learner Permit drivers from the perspective of the law?

I realise insurers will charge more etc etc so no need to get into that.

    Thanks.

    Thank you Alan and MYOB.

Not looking to go wild or anything but this means I have a bit more selection out there for used cars. Had it in my head it was limited to 1.2.

Just make sure to check quotes for different cars. And keep in mind that there's more to the quotes than just engine size, so don't be afraid to try larger engines.

Will do. When I find a car, I'll be sure to check with my current insurer how much extra it would be to insure it before buying it.

Limiting engine size is a bit pointless anyway, there's cars with 1.3 turbo engines putting out over 300bhp easily.

The figure suggested for the limit - which doesn't exist yet and will likely only ever apply to people with permits issued after a date in the future - has often been 1.4l.

Its ridiculous to propose a limit of anything other than power-to-weight, though. There are 50hp 1.4's in old heavy diesels; 100hp 1.4s in light cars and 200+hp 1.4s in extremely light cars...

No but there should be IMO.

As said tho, engine size has little to do with how fast a car is. One 1.4 will put out 75bhp in a car that ways 1.2 tonnes or so, another will put out 200bhp. If anything it should be power output per tonne that is restricted.

exactly:) how would u restrict them though some come in from Japan as 1.3 standerd and they'd be boosting well near 300bhp:/
me for instance my bzr puts out near 180 bhp at 1.6 while other 1.6 would struggle to make 100bhp:/
new nct rules should check engine and logbook match or else fail it:)
