What's wrong with my car!?

    Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone can help me or give some advice.

I was out driving around in my car yesterday and whilst in driving mode i went to change gear and next thing i know the gearbox went all 'fluidy' i don't know if this is the right word to use but basically i couldn't change into gear so ended up stopping the car and turing off the engine.

While the engine was off the gearbox was still 'fluidy' as if something snapped inside it!!! So i gave it 20mins and then started up the car and gearbox was fine again!! i could change into gear and reverse etc!

So i'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this?
Or does anyone know what it might be?

Any information would be kindly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Could you not get the gear stick to move out of the gear it was in?

No, that wasn't an issue. It was just like there was no tension around the gearbox i.e. normally you would apply some bit of force to move the gearbox into gear but in this instance no force was necessary it felt as though it was unattached to anything and it just flopped from side to side...i'm sorry if this isn't making much sense :( it's just really difficult trying to explain it :(

So the gear stick would freely move out of gear and freely into the next but the actual gears weren't engaging?

When you stopped was it in gear or neutral?

And did the lever still follow the H or was it free to move about wherever?

Yes the gear stick would of moved in and out of gear freely without it engaging.

I think when i stopped the car, i was going into Second to First gear and i think it failed to go into first gear so it just stayed in the middle of gearbox.

The gear stick didn't follow the H and it was free to move about......

What kind of car is it?
I've never encountered anything like this than rectifying itself.

Well it did rectify itself...that's the funny thing about it  I just want to get to the bottom of it. I could send it into a garage for them to have a look at it but i don't want to be ripped off! The garage that i would normally get it serviced with is 25miles from where i live and work.

    It's an Opel Corsa '02.

Once it went into gear it was fine again - maybe it has got to do something with the clutch?!

Its a strange one, It has all the symptoms of a linkage snapping or coming out of place but it doesn't make sence that it was perfect again after a while.

The clutch cannot in any way cause the gearstick to flop around freely.

If it was a leakage, should i be able to see fluid on the ground? because there doesn't appear to be any drips.
